Wild plot twist on my life:
1:30pm: laid off by editor after 26yrs as a columnist.
5:30pm: rehired by different editor to do same column.
Some full time staff, including my editor, were laid off, but longtime contract writers like me, will remain, but online only, not print.

Sad for the full-timers who were there for decades, but are at least eligible for unemployment, unlike contract writers. This is so very hard. Long talk with new (to me) editor about the changes. It's so painful for everyone. But I feel so grateful, as this is my livelihood.
I have heard from several friends today who have been laid off from different publications, plus emails from publications asking for donations. This is the new normal. But I will say declaratively, that it has NEVER been more critical for local newspapers to stay open for us all.
I want to reiterate my thanks to everyone who reached out to me today with support and positive comments about my work and its import. I got hundreds of messages. Everyone has been so very kind. This is a wild time and we must lift each other up, however we can. 🌿
