A source close to Senator Rand Paul explains the events of the last couple weeks:

A week and a half or so ago, Sen. Paul shut down his offices because of the coronavirus, telling his staff to work from home.

2/ On March 15, it was reported that two individuals at an event he attended in Kentucky -- Speed Art Museum's March 7 "Speed Ball" event -- tested positive for coronavirus.
3/ The source close to Paul says the senator was confident he hadn't interacted with the two so he didn't think much of it, but then he thought about the particular vulnerability of those with respiratory and lung issues.

I thought about it, because the president did not call the virus a hoax.

But i didn’t because he *did* call a hoax the concerns of those saying that the response from the president was insufficient and that he was downplaying the gravity of the crisis. And that too was a lie.
I guess that’s the problem with a politician who lies so often; while I agree that Democrats are mischaracterizing what he said, what he did say was also false so it’s tough to justify taking the time for a fact check when it’s not taking a stand defining the truth.

Chinese officials screwed up their initial response to the outbreak in Wuhan by prioritizing party loyalty over science and public health. They were more concerned about making the leader look good than saving lives.

We don't know what else Xi said because the White House won't even publish call summaries anymore, because they think we have no right to know what the president is doing.

1. We are seeing large scale disinformation campaigns from foreign adversaries aimed at undermining trust in the US government and its agencies during the #COVID19 #coronavirus epidemic.

The Trump administration is helping them immeasurably with its bungled communications.
2. First of all, classifying the senate briefing gives the impression that something surprising is being covered up, and fuels conspiracy theories. Far more likely, the secrecy is just an effort to save face after gutting public health infrastructure.

3. Trump is providing obviously false assurances. This is never a good look when trying to fight a disinformation campaign and muster the public trust needed for effective public health interventions.
