Our consumption oriented culture is in for a rude awakening as people ponder why they work so hard for things they don't need or even want just b/c of advertising & rack up consumer debt to do it.

This is the big awakening & a good thing for the planet, not so much for growth.
As the West shutters (EU, US & increasingly elsewhere) & retailers shut shop, factories in Asia are glutted & so some will likely have to shut.

Question: is this a temporary shock?

The average consumer now buys 60% more items of clothing than in 2000, but each garment is kept for half as long as consumers discard items more quickly. Of that vast majority of clothes in the waste disposal stream, roughly 70% will go to landfill and 30% will be incinerated.
The apparel sector is very wasteful via both consumers & producers. On top of consumers buying things they don't need on consumer debt (high interest), firms also destroy the unsold clothes, accessories & perfume instead of selling it off cheaply!

Scientists have also warned that polyester-type materials are adding to the problem of ocean plastic pollution. It's estimated that only 1% of our clothing is ultimately recycled into new garments because of this complexity!

Yep, we're the problem, esp our excessive consumption
