This is crazy! They just had to suspend trading in shares of Zoom Technology $ZOOM, because so many people assumed it was Zoom Video, the company that everyone is using to teleconference bloomberg.com/news/articles/… $ZM
But there's a twist!

The mobile audio recording device that @lauramcarlson gave me so that we could continue to record Odd Lots away from the office *IS* made by Zoom Technology, I believe. So arguably it's a work-from-home play too!
@lauramcarlson And in fact when we record Odd Lots now, we use Zoom Video for the call itself. And Zoom Technology for the recording. So they should merge and combine for the ultimate WFH tech stack.

So while I have a break in the show, here's something I was thinking about as a way to conceptualize how layoffs can permanently destroy societal wealth, even if the underlying issue were to fade quickly. 1/
If you've ever started a new job, even if it's a great fit, and you're very well qualified for it, you probably know that your first few weeks on the job aren't particularly productive. /2
You're getting to know your new colleagues. you're setting up email. You're learning the culture of the workforce. The pace. How the company operates. Even the very best job/employer fits take awhile until you're really at your peak and firing on all cylinders.

All monetary savings is a fiction. A nation’s only savings are its natural resources, its built physical infrastructure, stable social norms and government credibility. Individuals can of course save money, but on a collective scale, a pot of 1s and 0s don’t get us anything.
I’m not saying money is an illusion, a story or a collective myth or anything like that you might read in a crypto medium post. I’m saying that for a nation in crisis, there’s no collective pot of money we just draw on. What we draw on are functioning institutions and resources.
Imagine we let hundreds of thousands of small businesses incinerate and for people to lose their skills and relationships over time. All the 1s and 0s in the world can’t make up for that.

🤓if you know me, you know i’m an energy nerd.

i’ve visited coal & gas power stations, wind & solar farms, geothermal & hydro projects. (plus a few nuclear plants, but yet to get inside one.)

i was recently near the decommissioned yankee rowe plant and thought i'd pay a visit…
the yankee rowe nuclear power station (massachusettes) was one of the first commercial power reactors in the world.

the 185MW pressurised water reactor operated for more than 31 years (1960-1992).
in 1992 it was prematurely closed due to 'reactor pressure vessel embrittlement concerns'.

decommissioning was finally completed in 2007, some 15 years after the plant stopped operating, leaving _almost_ no trace of the former power station.

Of course, rhetorically it's absolute garbage. Of course the assertions are risible at best. Yes, it can be taken apart with relative ease.

Here's the thing - it's not meant to stand up to scrutiny. It's not meant to be held to account. It's a single-use talking point. /2
Nobody watches social video - clips between two to four minutes - with the expectation that they're going to be given a cogent response to an incredibly complex question.

In fact, most of the time we take on music via facebook, we're in a completely uncritical state. /3

People responding to prison abolitionists saying that a teenager shouldn’t be imprisoned for licking a tub of ice-cream with “but how will she learn!” speaks to how the US socializes people to think of incarceration as a form of accountability rather than a system of oppression.
Incarceration continues to be used to disproportionately criminalize already marginalized communities. Colonization robs us of the ability to imagine otherwise. People who see prison as the only viable possibility for “taking responsibility” need to see beyond the carceral state
I really encourage folks to read and learn more about transformative justice, through which we can work towards safety & accountability without relying on state & systemic violence, including incarceration or policing. A good resource is transformharm.org by @prisonculture

Let's analyse that claim 1/
We don't know what Brexit will look like, but every possible outcome will be worse than the status quo, even according to the government's own projections.
That means concretely a decrease in standard of living even in best case scenario. 2/
A no-deal scenario will be a disaster, let's call it what it is. Food and medicine shortages, fuel shortages and electricity outages. Not enough care workers, doctors, nurses, teachers. Lots of wishful thinking in the no-deal Brexit prep documents of UK government. 3/
