Innings that I wish I had watched live -

Ranjitsinhji's 154* on debut in 1896 - Old Trafford

DG Bradman's 103 at Leeds in 1938

Peter May's 285 against WI at Edgbaston in 1957

Gavaskar's 96 against Pakistan at Bangalore in 1987

Graham Gooch's 154 against WI at Leeds in 1991
On why these innings -

Ranji's 154 was on his debut. He had his ear slit by Ernie Jones - the Aus fast bowler - arguably the fastest of his time.

Ranji's selection itself (being a brown man) was highly controversial and this innings answered his detractors
DG Bradman's 103 won Aus the match and ensured Aus retained the Ashes in 1938

Arguably his most underrated innings

What made it unique was - DGB did not appeal against the light (on tactical grounds) and played much of his innings in the dark!!
Peter May's 285 was perhaps the greatest innings of the 1950s

It lasted nearly two days and his legendary partnership with Cowdrey was a classic in defensive batsmanship

It helped England finally conquer the threat of Ramadhin and Valentine - who had tormented them since 1950
Gavaskar's 96 was in the last test of his career against some v fine Pak spinners on a turning track in Bangalore

Widely regarded as one of his best

Unfortunately India lost the match notwithstanding Gavaskar's efforts
Gooch's 154 was against a full-fledged WI attack - comprising of Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh and Patterson!

England won the test and managed to draw the series 2-2

This was the first time they had won a test at home against WI in 22 years!
