It is human nature that the oppressed will hate their oppressors and seek revenge. Colonialism exploits this all too human tendency to argue that the colonized are violent savages unfit for self rule, and should therefore be denied agency and treated as subhumans.
Colonialism involves massive, undiscriminating violence; the violence of the colonizer is legitimized, meanwhile the counter-violence of the colonized is called terrorism is used as pretext to deepen the colonial venture.
Violent resistance is absolutely understandable, and self defense is a human right, but violent resistance can be easily exploited by the colonizers to strengthen the very narrative of colonialism that we're trying to shake off. This is another argument for nonviolence.
Colonialism is inherently racist; it argues that the colonized are subhumans, and indeed works hard to create and that subhuman state and keep the colonized in that state in order to justify continued subjugation. We need to be smarter than our colonizers.
One of the deepest acts of resistance is humanizing the colonized and the subjugated. Colonialism lives on dehumanization, it cannot long continue if the colonized are finally universally seen as human beings deserving of full dignity.
