#IbnArabi (d. 1240) is famed for his monistic doctrine of #wahdatalwujud although #WilliamChittick ibnarabisociety.org/articles/qunaw… has pointed out he never used the term preferring al-wujud al-Haqq or similar #SufiMetaphysicsContested 1/
In the immediate generation after him the meaning of God as the only existent or rather the ‘absolute being’ (al-wujud al-mutlaq) was debated by his step-son Sadr al-Din Qunawi (d. 1274) with the Avicennian philosopher Nasir al-Din al Tusi (d. 1274) books.google.co.uk/books/about/al… 2/
Ibn ‘Arabi’s metaphysics were rapidly adopted by Persian poets like Maghribi (d. 1408) and by theologians leading to further contestations between Sa’d al-Din Taftazani (d. 1389) and ‘Ali al-Jurjani (d. 1413) the famous disputants at the court of Timur (d. 1405) 3/
Although it is now know thanks to the PhD in 1984 of Bakri Aladdin that the text attributed to Taftazani attacking monism was actually penned by his student ‘Ala’ al-Din al-Bukhari maktaba-falsafia.comبكري-بن-حسن-علاء-الدين.html 4/
Alexander Knysh @UMich has a study on the #IbnArabi controversy which continues even today books.google.co.uk/books/about/Ib… 5/
Knysh even wrote a piece on #Khomeini espousal of #IbnArabi in his famous letter to #Gorbachev al-islam.org/call-divine-un… 6/
The #Ottoman reception of #IbnArabi was particularly interesting not least after the conquest of Syria in 1517 by Selim I (d. 15020) and the pious forgery of the text forseeing it al-Shajara al-Nu’maniyya 7/
#IbnArabi began to be seen as something of a modern guru and preceptor of the Ottomans - see Ertugrul 8
The early mixed reception is studied in this @UCBerkeley #PhD digitalassets.lib.berkeley.edu/etd/ucb/text/Z… with Dawud Qaysari (d. 1350) and Molla Fanari (d. 1431) famous school men and prolific glossators on #IbnArabi 9/
See this useful intro to Qaysari academia.edu/31935760/Dawud… 10/
In the 16th the mantle of anti-monism attacking #IbnArabi was taken up by Ibrahim Halabi (d. 1549) studied in this excellent MA dissertation etd.ceu.edu/2019/kaplan_ca… 11/
He wrote works responding to defenders of #IbnArabi like Davani (d. 1504), Suyuti (d. 1505) and possibly Sha’rani (d. 1558) which may have influenced Mulla ‘Ali Qari (d. 1606) and later the Kazizadeler 12/
The first of these is Ni’mat al-dhari’a fi nusrat al-shari’a on which fatwas condemning #IbnArabi especially from #Ottoman authorities were collected 13/
The second is Tanbih al-ghabi attacking Suyuti in his Tafsih al-ghabi on monism as well as the famous controversy on the ‘faith’ of Pharaoh 14/
The Mulla ‘Ali Qari text is R fi haqiqat al-tawhid 15/
All these texts have been published in recently years by #Salafi authors attacking the legacy of #IbnArabi as well as famous defences like Idah al-maqsud of Nabulusi (d. 1731) drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw-BK7… 16/
The early modern debate is studied by Khaled el Rouayheb cambridge.org/core/books/isl… 17/
Nevertheless we still need a full intellectual history of #SufiMetaphysicsContested a joined up one which takes in #SouthEastAsia, #SouthAsia, the #Persian and #Shii contexts as well the #Arabic context 18/
Nevertheless a fuller
