After posting the rooftop image, I got a lot of questions. I am motivated to share our 10 year journey. I have witnessed these mechanisms in neighborhoods like PECHS, Azam Basti, many other areas. All it takes is neighborhood association. Let me share some notes
Alternative way of urban neighborhood development; @DHAKarachiOfc I have written a lot on this, it has a failed isolated grid. It doesn't involve the ideology of a neighborhood. This image below is my street in a non DHA zone. We have 30 houses, build an internal association. Image
We recycle, we have planted more than 70 trees outside. You can see it is the greenest street in the neighborhood. Neighbors take care of street dogs, feed them, children play safely outside like how we use to when we were growing up. There is a lot of trust and care involved.

Women’s Movements in South Asian Countries - A 🧵

Movements of women's rights in #SouthAsia can be traced on junctures of striving for justice in social issues & handling external (often post-colonial) influences.

1/6 Image
In #India, it was 1980 when the Mathura rape case propelled an anti-rape feminist-led movement that remains the biggest wave till today.

But the current wave spreads beyond protection against sexual violence, to economic rights and has taken up significant digital space.

2/6 Image
In #Pakistan, Women Action Forum (WAF) remained the face of women’s movement through 1980s & beyond.

A fresh start came about in 2018 when yearly demonstration called ‘Aurat March’ surfaced. Its momentum has equally met with backlash from different segments of society.

The below tweet is steaming pile of Hindutva nonsense. I haven't done this in a while, but let's unpack, shall we?

#history #India #SouthAsia #Hindutva #propaganda
First of all sources -- Those making this ahistorical statement are not historians. Both men are Hindu Right ideologues, and the individual to whom the statement is attributed is a plagiarist and Savarkar sycophant.

What are they claiming and how does it hold up to scrutiny?
There seems to be a claim of a single Islamic conquest of India. That's wrong.

Real story -- There were many Indo-Muslim dynasties who ruled parts of South Asia over the centuries. Some came from outside the subcontinent, and others did not. Nobody ever conquered all of India.

Mountains of garbage near #SouthAsia megacities are contributing to some of the world’s strongest and most persistent #methane clouds observed by satellite, highlighting a major challenge in the global climate fight. A 🧵 on my latest for @climate

Waste sites generate the potent greenhouse gas when organic material like food scraps or cardboard breaks down in the absence of oxygen. 2/10
Failing to curb releases from the waste sector, which is responsible for about 20% of all methane generated from human activity, could derail global climate goals. A good overview on this issue from @RockyMtnInst here: rmi.org/insight/mitiga… 3/10

NEW—Global estimates of #ExcessDeaths indicates that 18.2 million people may have died because of the #COVID19 pandemic by December 31, 2021, according to our analysis published in @TheLancet
thelancet.com/journals/lance…
The peer-reviewed analysis found over 18 million* deaths as opposed to the reported nearly 6 million deaths, more than 3 times higher.

“COVID effectively increased the global death rate each year by nearly 20% in both 2020 and 2021,” said IHME Director Chris Murray ⤵
💡So what is #ExcessMortality?

Our excess mortality estimates reflect the full impact of the #pandemic on mortality around the world (after correcting for known biases), not just the deaths directly attributable to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

According to the study, more than 27% of all deaths are from outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5), #coal combustion alone was responsible for half of those deaths, with natural gas and #oil combustion accounting for the other half
💡Notably, the burning of solid biofuels (like wood🪵for indoor heating and cooking 🍳), is another source of PM2.5, accounting for an addition 740k deaths, especially across #SouthAsia and Sub-Saharan #Africa.

#IndoPacific #Eurasia #SouthAsia #SoutheastAsia #AsiaPacific
2/Thus, South Asia will witness growing competition between China and India over ‘hearts and minds’ in each of these countries, even as there might be diplomatic efforts towards the normalisation of relations between New Delhi and Islamabad in the future.
3/ Logically, the US regards India as a significant and reliable partner in creating a counterweight to China’s overwhelming presence in South and Southeast Asia.
