By now Corona virus has infected almost all countries worldwide and killed more than 3,20,000 people which is going to increase.

Many countries have been in full or partial lockdown since February with a forecast of it to continue for several months. Economy has fallen everywhere, man’s spirit is battered and still we are fighting against this deadly virus.

If you notice, mankind has seen worst pandemics in the last 20 years – SARS, Avian flu, Swine flu, MERS-CoV, Ebola and now Corona. Add to this, new and emerging diseases like KFD, Chikungunya, Nipah, Lassa etc. What could be the reason?

We have been increasingly populating the earth n filling it up with 1 kind of species. Earlier we had many kinds of PESTS – now we have 1 dominant kind of pest (HUMAN), if we stop thinking from a anthropocentric view!

IF you look at the world population from 10,000 BC to today – there is an astonishing 1860 times growth, more so in the last century. The world population was 1 billion in 1800, we are at close to 7.8 billion. The difference between birth/death number is 221718/day.

There is a net increase of 1 human/0.39 second; while the population of other species in decreasing. We have wiped out about 60% of wildlife in last 4 decades.

More than 20% of Amazon forests lost in last 50 years.

We have shifted from ecocentricism to Anthropocentric lifestyle. We believe that humankind is the most important being on this earth and treat and exploit other earth dwellers with this mindset. I find this as “Narcissism at the species level”.

We elucidate the whole world in terms of human values.
If something is of value to us - we overproduce it. If something has no importance to humankind - we try to destroy it.

This has led to widespread destruction of Nature leading to shifting of the animals closer to humans.

All this reading led to me stumbling over a phenomenon called “Spillover infection”. This happens when a reservoir population having high pathogen presence comes into contact with a new host population (humans). When forests are destroyed – where else the wildlife would go???

AFTER this difficult period of lockdown I thought humans would have learnt some lessons.
1. Value human relations
2. Understand the importance of nature and help in reducing pollution
3. Prioritise happiness over materialistic needs.

4. Live healthy
5. Think about family planning and importance of savings
6. Use this opportunity as a second chance at life.

BUT, as I am seeing – once the lockdown has lifted, we are back to being our own idiotic selves again.

Smoking, drinking, partying, having junk food – as if it was difficult to exist without these; throwing masks everywhere, not caring a bit about environment and already forgotten being humans as we do not need any help anymore.

The only cure to all this is stop from being Antropocentric and shift towards Nature/ecocentric living. This is one last chance to RESET our meaningless lives, start new life and leave something to cherish for the next generation.

We are the biggest parasites in this world and IF WE DON’T MEND OUR WAYS – THE NEXT CORONA WILL NOT BE FAR AWAY.
