[An Open Letter to #BobChapek, CEO Walt @Disney Company]

Dear Mr. Chapek,

1/ Since the release of its teaser trailer last year, Mulan has already been under heavy global criticism.
2/ A few days ago, it was reported that Disney offers "special thanks" in its credits to eight government entities in Xinjiang where re-education camps are reportedly located, including the Turpan Municipal Bureau of Public Security.
3/ According to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the Turpan Municipal Bureau of Public Security is responsible for running at least 14 re-education camps in the area "to extrajudicially detain minorities."
4/ In October 2019, the U.S. Commerce Department already placed the department on its Entry List, for participating in "human rights violations and abuses in the implementation of China's campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology...
5/ ...surveillance against Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups in the XUAR." While Disney has been completely remaining silent on the Uyghur issue, its cooperations with the officials responsible for brutal crackdowns on Uighur Muslim minority really...
6/ sends an alarming signal to the world - what kind of values Disney advocates for, especially when the company's target market is the children worldwide. Besides, the film also expresses thanks to three CCP's propaganda departments in Xinjiang, from the...
7/ ...Publicity Department of CPC Turpan Municipal Committee, the Publicity Department of the CPC Turpan Gaochang District Municipal Committee, to Publicity Department of the CPC Shanshan County Committee.
8/ It casts more doubts on whether Mulan is the propaganda masterpiece that Disney works hand in hand with the CCP government to whitewash the cultural genocide and human violations on ethnic minorities in the region.
9/ In fact, Mulan was filmed in 2018, the same year that China staged the hardest suppression on Uyghurs in the region. The film was also shot in locations where all these re-education camps have been documented.
10/ As media reports, there are at least 7 re-education camps located all along the highway from the Turpan airport to Shanshan desert where the filming took place. Turpan was also the first documented case that political indoctrination was used against Uyghurs by the authority.
11/ According to the 2019 Report on International Religious Freedom published by the U.S. Department of State, over a million of Uighurs, ethnic Kazakhs, Hui, members of other Muslim groups and some Uighur Christians were detained in internment camps in Xinjiang and...
12/ subject to "forced disappearance, political indoctrination, torture, psychological and physical and psychological abuse, including forced sterilization and sexual abuse, forced labour, and prolonged detention without trial because of their religion and ethnicity."
13/ As the incident has sparked global concerns, I call upon Disney to disclose the details of its agreements with Xinjiang authorities, as well as all the subsidies, funding, assistance and instructions that it has received from the authorities.
14/ As the movie is widely considered as an attempt to spread propaganda & whitewash China's cultural genocide, I also urge Disney to suspend the screening of such a controversial movie and clarify its stance on human rights violations regarding re-education camps in the region.
15/ Regards,
Joshua Wong

[Trapped in the black hole -
After two-week detention in #China, still no update abt 12 HK #AsylumSeekers]

1. Only thing we know is they are all taken to detention centre in #Shenzhen & Chinese cops will decide whether to arrest them formally by Oct 1, according to #China’s law
2. But even after the arrest, there's still a huge question mark on when they will be prosecuted, put on trial and how long trial will last. Prosecution can be further delayed if Chinese prosecutors claim they need “supplementary investigation”. It will be like an endless tunnel.
3. Under #China's law, suspects can be released on bail. But in reality, especially when all the #asylumseekers may face further charges under #China's #nationalsecuritylaw and other criminal laws, the chance of bail is slim.

[In every 700 #Hongkongers, one was arrested because of #HongKongProtests]

1. Since the outbreak of #HKprotests last year, 9672 #HKers have been arrested when they protested against injustice, with 2093 prosecuted.
2. With arrestees from 11yo kid to 84yo elderly, #hkpolice is now staging the biggest political purge across generations in the city, especially at the time when #hkgov attempting to rewrite history, whitewash #policebrutality and censor textbooks.
3. You may wonder what #HKers can still do under draconian #nationalsecuritylaw, arbitrary arrests, unchecked police violence that even targets pregnant women, and also the detentions of 12 asylum seekers in #China, with their fate still unknown for nearly 2 weeks.

[Religious talks via #GoogleMeet allegedly surveilled by #CCP security agency in #HK]

1. @hkcnews_com reports the HKCCCC church held an online talk on Christianity in #China via #googlemeet on Aug 30, illustrating the history of religious policies in China.
2. Although the internal event was exclusively for members, three unknown users, respectively called “HK branch of China’s national security bureau”, “China’s national security bureau” and “Shenzhengovernment” made requests to join the talk soon after the talk started.
3. When the pastor tried to report the issue to all the participants, he was repeatedly removed by a third-party entity from the chatroom, more than 10 times, which making the talk forced to be suspended.

[Say no to digital authoritarianism,
Boycott universal testing]

1. Defying doubts, #HKgov will impose universal testing in #HK, a citywide DNA collection viewed as a way for more surveillance. Medical experts repeatedly raised concerns below that are completely ignored by gov:
2. No inflow curb: test can only be achieved w/ full border seal, stay-at-home order & full population testing in short time. All don’t exist in HK. As #Hkgov now exempt tens of thousands ppl from quarantine, main factor for #HK third wave, the test is deemed to failure w/ leaks.
3. High false-negative rate: #COVID19 studies suggest that false-negative rate of current testers ranges from 20% to 100%. This unreliable testing result will create a misleading virus-free perception, which will further worsen the outbreaks in the community.

[Young protester says he was beaten by prison guards]

1/ A 21-year-old man told @Reuters he was beaten and humiliated by guards in prison. Guards routinely slapped him, hit him with rulers, and elbowed his spine at the Pik Uk Correctional Institution.

uk.reuters.com/article/uk-hon…
2/ "We sang protest anthem “Glory to HK” in the cell. We were punished the next day.” He said a guard told him to say thank you as he slapped him once. He said the prison guards hit them in ways to avoid bruising and scars and in places in the prison where there was no CCTV.
3/ Joshua Wong told Reuters he was subjected to demeaning treatment in prison, such as being made to squat naked while being questioned by guards in an area of the prison with no CCTV.

[Secret deal: China's security cops can investigate in #Switzerland]

1. @NZZaS: #China & #Swiss signed a secret deal in 2015 allowing #Beijing's security officers to investigate Chinese nationals WITHIN #Switzerland for 2 weeks, even w/o official status.
nzzas.nzz.ch/schweiz/geheim…
2. Five years after the secret deal was signed, no Swiss MP had ever heard of the deal. In contrast to similar agreements between #Switzerland and other countries, the one with #China is harsher as #Chinese cops can come and investigate without prior discussion with Swiss govt.
3. Even though the treaty claims only covering smugglers and illegal immigrants, it is doubtful whether this extraterritorial enforcement power can be abused under the newly enacted #nationalsecuritylaw that covers foreigners.
