Swedish regulators yesterday banned the use of telecom equipment from China’s Huawei Technologies Co (華為) and ZTE Corp (中興) in the country’s 5G network ahead of the spectrum auction scheduled for next month.

The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) reported that the Swedish Armed Forces and Security Service evaluations were followed by the setting of the license conditions.

Following pressure from the US, European governments have been investigating the role of Chinese companies in developing their networks, which they have said poses a security threat since, among other concerns, Chinese companies and people must, by law,

aid the state in collecting intelligence. In July, the UK ordered Huawei equipment to be completely purged from its 5 G network by 2027, becoming one of the first European countries to do so. Sweden's security service called China "one of the biggest threats against Sweden."

Huawei and ZTE did not respond immediately to requests for comment on the decision by Sweden, home of Ericsson AB, one of Europe's leading suppliers of telecommunications equipment.

Rival telecom equipment manufacturers Ericsson and Finland's Nokia Oyj are likely to benefit from the ban.
