Trilateral naval exercises in the South China Sea were conducted by the US, Japan and Australia on Monday, the US Seventh Fleet reported yesterday.
It was their fifth joint operation in the fleet's operations area this year, it said in a statement. The JS Kirisame of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and the Royal Australian Navy's HMAS Arunta joined the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain.
Meanwhile, Canberra and New Delhi declared yesterday that Australia will join, at the end of this year, the annual Malabar naval exercises to be conducted off the Indian coast with Japan and the US.
In the statement, the exercise is to be conducted in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea to "strengthen cooperation between navies," said the Indian Ministry of Defense.
For the first time since 2007, the decision to include Australia in the exercises means that all members of the international grouping known as the Quad will be militarily active.

A country in the middle of Europe is facing a relapse into the Middle Ages: Poland is heading for a further tightening of its already strict abortion law.
The Constitutional Court in Warsaw declared a previously applicable exemption from the abortion ban to be unconstitutional. According to this, termination of pregnancy was previously permitted if the unborn child had severe malformations.
According to the judges, this violates the right to life guaranteed in the Polish constitution. More than 100 MPs, mostly from the ranks of the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), had turned to the highest Polish court with their criticism of the current legal situation.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier has given freelancers and self-employed people hope for an "entrepreneur wage" in the course of planned improvements to Corona aid.
However, an agreement must still be found in the coalition, Altmaier said after a video conference with business associations in Berlin. Altmaier agreed to improve and increase government aid. It is also about how solo self-employed people can be better helped.
Business associations have been criticizing for a long time that the previous aid is not a perfect fit. Andreas Lutz, Chairman of the Board of the Association of Founders and Self-Employed Germany, said that many solo self-employed workers work from home.
