A word about the movie #Contagion: I thought it was fantastic when it came out. It’s even better (and scarier) now that I've rewatched it during a #pandemic like the one it portrays. Fortunately ours isn't as deadly; the fake disease had a 25% mortality rate. /1
The makers of #Contagion consulted with scientists, the #WHO, and Dr. #SanjayGupta to ensure it was an accurate representation of a #pandemic and best practices. In other words, this #Hollywood movie crew was better informed than our current #WhiteHouse. /2
#Contagion accurately portrayed how a #pandemic is downplayed at 1st, symptomatic patients roam in public as experts try to sound the alarms, and countries argue over where it began. Empty storefronts, food shortages, #masks. But even #Hollywood couldn't imagine mask backlash. /3
Most interesting was #JudeLaw as a #conspiracy peddling blogger who made millions touting a #fakecure and convincing ppl not to get the #vaccine. #Hollywood couldn't have dreamed this role would be played by the U.S. prez, high-level officials, #GOP Senators, and governors./4
#Contagion is terrifying because so many people die but also bc it reminds us of the reality at THAT time (2011) when one could reasonably expect govt officials would make policy based on #science. Not on a whim, not purely self motivated, not based on debunked #conspiracies.../5
and not playing politics with people’s lives. Speaking of which, kicking everyone off #ACA #healthcare during a #pandemic...no one imagined that in 2011. #Contagion is a best-case scenario, with a working govt, decent leadership & a focus on science. Still tens of millions die./6
Again, thankfully the #covid mortality rate is very low in comparison to the #pandemic in #Contagion. But ours will drag out so much longer than necessary due to the total negligence of this administration and cruel policies pushed by the #GOP. /7
Consider that #stimulus and #unemployment bills have been torpedoed by #GOP led by #McConnell who insists on protecting NOT citizens, but corporations & employers. They'd guarantee companies can’t be sued if their reckless practices cause workers or customers to get #COVID19 ./8
Never before have I kinda sorta wished a deadly #disaster #movie like #Contagion were true (only in the respects mentioned above). But this is #2020 so I guess here we are. Thoughts? /9
