On Wednesday afternoon, an aircraft bomb from the Second World War was found during construction work in the Heckert area in Chemnitz. There will be a mega evacuation in the residential area on Thursday.
The five hundredweight bomb (500 kg) was discovered around 2:50 p.m. during construction work on Wilhelm-Firl-Strasse. After the find, construction work was stopped and the adjacent area cordoned off.
To defuse the American bomb, the city, in coordination with the ordnance disposal service, has set an evacuation radius of 1000 meters. Exactly which streets are affected will be determined on Thursday.
A provisional restricted area includes parts of Stollberger Straße, Wladimir-Sagorski-Straße, parts from Südring to Helbersdorfer Straße and parts of Wolgograder Allee.
There are numerous prefabricated buildings in the area. Around 15,000 residents are affected by the evacuation. The evacuation should begin on Thursday afternoon.
