Punjab has about 10 Lakh farm families (All India 15 crores). State govt gives them an electricity subsidy of about Rs 8000 crore. Center gives them a fertilizer subsidy of Rs 5,000 crore. That is Rs 13000 crores or about Rs 1.3 Lakhs per household.
Punjab sold 100 Lakh Metric Tons or 10 Crore Quintals of Paddy. At a price that is Rs 500 more than market price. So that is another 5000 crore from tax payer. Or another Rs 50,000 per farm family and as usual large farmers would have got crores
Assuming similar figure for wheat, Tax payer is giving about Rs 2.5 Lakh to every farm family of Punjab every year. I as tax payer demand that our money should benefit small farmers
केवल करदाता ही असली अन्नदाता है। बाक़ी सब मात्र लाभार्थी हैं।
Another interesting point is how Punjab, the richest state of India for 50 years since independence has fallen significantly behind many states in last 20 years.
They are losing industry. Have very low participation in service industry. Fear for future is natural.
For decades the Indian government has patronized Punjab & Haryana farmers. Now they fear losing that privilege. Many of them have grown lazy. Free electricity, cheap pesticides & fertilizers, Bihari workers and an assured high price has spoiled them.
Farmers' income can be increased substantially ONLY by taking a substantial number of people out of farming. 45% people can’t be accommodated in a sector that is 13% of GDP. With #DirectCashRelief for most vulnerable, we need to slowly stop feeding fat cats.
So I am not alone who felt that @jomalhotra was totally out of her depth. Many times she looked dazed when presented with basic facts. Why can't journos prepare a little better?
Few more comments from viewers. Yes @jomalhotra looked very uncomfortable with facts presented by #AshokGulati and no wonder she came up with such a misleading headline for this interview
Maybe an anti-government headline encourages some of the protestors to watch this.

@Aabhas24 Iyas ibn Qabisah al-Ta'i I (from Tayy tribe) was the Sassanid governor of al-Hirah from 602 to 617. The Banu Bakr ibn Wa'il tribe opposed his rule which led to the Battle of Dhi Qar in 609, in which the Sassanids were defeated.
@Aabhas24 Tayy is an ancient Arab tribe. They helped Lakhmids rule Al-Hirah in the 610s. A chieftain & poet of this tribe, Hatim al-Ta'i, is widely known even today through stories (Qissa-e-Hatem-tai ) about his generosity. He lived in Ha'il (Saudi Arabia) & was mentioned in some Hadiths.
@Aabhas24 The Tayy's original homeland was Yemen but in the 2nd century, they migrated to the North Arabian mountain ranges of Jabal Aja and Jabal Salma (traditional homeland of the tribe even today). The two main branches of Tayy were Al al-Ghawth & Al Jadilah.

Indian Muslims protesting against @EmmanuelMacron because he has spoken against Islamic terror after #Francebeheading & expects Muslims living in France to respect the secular French constitution raises a very important question.
What comes first to them - Religion or Nation
This is not the first time, Indian Muslims have shown solidarity with Muslims in other nations. They have been very vocal about Muslim causes around the world & opposed even #CAA that had nothing to do with them.
A thread on Ummah, Caliphate, Khilafat movement & Indian Muslims
Ummah means community. It is distinguished from shaʻb, which means a nation. Today It is a synonym for Ummat al-Islām, meaning the Islamic community and it is commonly used to mean the collective community of Muslim people across countries.
First is for fast tracking citizenship to persecuted minorities of three Islamic states. No Indian of any religion should have any problem with that. So stop opposing #CitizenshipAct on its own merits first.
@BDUTT@htTweets Now let’s talk of #NRC. First of all there are no specific details of same are in public domain yet. But let’s start with objective.
It seeks to identify citizens of our nation from non citizens (illegal infiltrators who are here for other reasons than religious persecution)
@BDUTT@htTweets Again no indian is an affected party in #NRC At least theoretically.
Yes. Concerns about lack of documents in spite of being genuine citizens are genuine and understandable. And we need to wait for details on the process before indulging in violent protests on imaginary fears
Because they are being persecuted precisely for that reason. Their religion. These three countries are Islamic states which discriminate against others by law, by design. All of them have discriminatory constitution.

that prevents people of other faiths from occupying highest offices. All of them have draconian blasphemy laws which are often invoked to jail, even kill people of other faiths on slightest provocation.
