1/. At 10am, a London court will assess #JulianAssange’s bail application days after they blocked his extradition to US

Whilst the charges that he still faces cast a dark shadow over journalism, his release on bail would be a ray of hope for #Assange.

Two things human rights abusers around the world should know:

1. We’re onto you

2/. The thing is, as they sit in their mansions surrounded by fences & flunkies, they already know - deep in their souls - that they have already lost

The “that which has hardened will never win” line is from Andrei Tarkovsky👇& it is a good one to remember in darker times.
3/. “Because what has hardened will never win” is the last line.

Note, it is “will never win” not “can never win” or “may never win”

It is especially important if you are:

1. one of the good people filled with despair

2. one of the bad people filled with arrogance & fear.

Brazil has the world’s 3rd worst outbreak outside US & India

Is it a coincidence that these countries are run by populist nationalists?

2/. In 2017, Steve Bannon asked @Nigel_Farage be part of a "convening authority" to "knit together a populist nationalist movement around the world".

He mentions Modi in India, but Bolsonaro in Brazil, Trump in US & Johnson in UK would also be part of it.
3/. Why were some of the most advanced economies in the world so woefully unprepared for #COVID?

The parallels btw UK & US flawed COVID strategies are uncannily similar:
- ignoring WHO warnings
- late lockdown
- lack of PPE
- introducing face masks on the same day, 4 months late

1/. On New Year’s Eve last year, I sent a post-midnight cartoon to friends with a message saying hold on tight & enjoy the ride & a Rilke quote: “And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been."

Until 20 January & Trump's departure, a danger of "Rapture-believing" hawks launching strikes on Iran remains.
3/. At the time of the Iran airstrike - while @BorisJohnson was holidaying on a private Caribbean island with his pregnant girlfriend - another crisis was brewing: #COVID19

@MattHancock says he knew about COVID at the v start of January & informed the PM.
