Wow!

@MattHancock has announced that the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Jenny Harries, will be the first chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency which will aim to plan, prevent & respond to health emergencies like pandemics

How is #JennyHarries still in a job
2/. Jenny Harries has been a handmaiden of the #HerdImmunityScandal

#HerdImmunity is an outcome, NEVER a “strategy”

On 12 March, the govt stopped community testing

On 26/3, #JennyHarries falsely claimed that community testing was "not an appropriate mechanism as we go forward”
3/. Stopping community testing - as the UK did on 12 March - would only make sense as a strategy if the UK’s strategy was to allow #COVID19 to spread through the population

Questioned by @Jeremy_Hunt, Jenny Harries changed her story to a claim of capacity issues. #JennyHarries
4/. Remember, “allowing #COVID19 to spread through the population” was one of the options spelled out by the PM in his #TakeItOnTheChin interview on 5/3/20

It was also the wording used by @Peston on 12/3/20 after he’d been briefed by a “senior No.10 source” who remains anonymous
5/. When Chris Whitty & #JennyHarries announced the inexplicable decision to “pivot” away from community testing on 12 March, public health experts, virologists & epidemiologists made clear that this was the wrong thing to do

But their voices were ignored
6/. On 6 May, @Keir_Starmer asked the PM if he could explain why #JennyHarries had not told the truth about the real reason for abandoning contact tracing on 12 March

He couldn’t!

@BorisJohnson’s answer showed a deeply disturbing lack of knowledge
7/. On 14 April, #JennyHarries described the UK’s approach to the #COVID19 pandemic as “an international exemplar” of preparedness

In reality the UK was WOEFULLY underprepared despite warnings from scientists, intel reports WHO, & our own #ExerciseCygnus.
8/. In August, #JennyHarries - asked whether it was safe for children to go back to school - trotted out the “you could be hit by a bus” argument

The question - to a scientist - was not if children might die

It was whether they’d spread #COVID19 to their parents & grandparents
9/. #JennyHarries sidesteps the question

"When children do get infection it is usually very mild & sometimes asymptomatic & so the overall risk to the child themselves is very very small”

The child may not be at risk but “asymptomatic" would risk others
10/. Science is best” #JennyHarries tells @KayBurley before explaining #lockdown “would not be first on our list” on 10/3/20

Despite the horrific situation in Italy, warnings from WHO & top scientists, she said the UK will try to avoid a #COVID19 lockdown
11/. On 30/3/20, #JennyHarries claimed there were no PPE shortages

We had the stock but distribution was sometimes “a little bit tricky”

Why were NHS workers reusing gowns & wearing bin bags?

Why were care home staff reusing PPE?

Why did so many die?
12/ This was #JennyHarries on the 1st day of #CheltenhamFestival assuring us that large outdoor events were safe

She also said we didn't need testing because we were a first world country, that face masks don’t work & we were “an exemplar of preparedness”
13/. “Could it just be they got it wrong?” @piersmorgan asks @OliverDowden

How is it that same ministers & govt scientists who got it SO wrong on lockdown, testing, screening, track & trace, PPE, care homes, etc. are still making the decisions? #COVID19
14/. “I'm absolutely delighted to discuss death statistics comparisons”

On 14 May, #JennyHarries was asked why the govt had stopped sharing intn’l #COVID19 death statistic tables

Was it because the UK now had the worst #COVID19 death rate in the world?
15/. The science for face masks was always the same (see Asia): if you want to protect yourself & others to some degree, wear one

Some scientists argued the benefits of masks weren’t proven

#JennyHarries went a step further: masks could put you in danger
16/. In this clip👆#JennyHarries pushes behavioural reasons why wearing masks is perhaps more dangerous

Did this also come from #DavidHalpern & @B_I_Tweets?

After 4 months prevarication (remember those packed on Tubes, no masks), the UK (& US), both U-turned...on the same day!
17/. It is not just #JennyHarries who has been pushing erroneous & unscientific advice

In June, @TheLancet editor, @richardhorton1, said he thought there was “an element of collusion” btw scientists & the govt

Incredibly, all the scientists who got it so wrong are still in post

1/. Some people just can't take criticism

Did you know that it's illegal to insult a leader in more than a dozen countries

In Poland, a journalist faces up to 3 years in prison for calling President Duda a "moron" in a Facebook post in November

Lighten up Duda, you d******d! Image
2/. Insulting leaders could land you in jail for 3yrs in #Venezuela, 4yrs in #Turkey, 5yrs in #Netherlands, 7yrs in #Bahrain & 15yrs in #Thailand

In #Spain, you can go to jail for insulting the King or the police as rapper @PabloHasel found to his cost
3/. In America, insulting Donald Trump became a national pastime

In Britain, Boris Johnson plays up his “loveable buffoon” image as he clowns around on zip wires & in hard hats

But whilst Trump & Johnson may be very different animals, they both fulfil a very similar function. Image

1/. A year ago, at midnight on 23 March, Britain finally went into lockdown

On the same day, #FacultyAI proposed modelling for “targeted #HerdImmunity

Govt scientist, Edmunds claims late lockdown was an “error” & @neil_ferguson says it cost 20,000 lives
2/. But to lockdown earlier wasn’t an “error”

It was part of the govt’s nefarious strategy

They knew they would have to lock down & yet the govt didn’t even model for lockdown until mid-March

They used the unscientific idea of “behavioural fatigue” to delay lockdown by 3 weeks
3/. The PM claims he “stuck to the science like glue”

It isn’t true

Late lockdown wasn’t scientific

“Behavioural fatigue” wasn’t scientific

The #HerdImmunity strategy - allowing #COVID19 to spread - was deadly

Herd immunity is an outcome NEVER a strategy

But they knew this

“If you see me - shivering & dumbed with loss - stand by me, because grief needs a witness”

Tmw - on the anniversary of the UK’s late lockdown - take a moment to grieve

Put candle in your window & observe a minute’s silence at 8pm.

It is important to remember that grief isn’t all about sorrow

You can only experience grief if you have experienced love

Indeed, grief is the collateral damage of love

The more deeply you have loved, the more painfully felt the grief #CovidMemorialDay #COVID19 #DayOfReflection
"To heal we must remember"

When @JoeBiden was elected, @CovidMemoryDay contacted his staffers

The first thing #Biden did on coming to office was hold a #COVIDMemorialDay

1/. At a time when many countries are starting to try & find ways of combating violence against women, #Turkey has just pulled out of #IstanbulConvention

This is the Convention on violence against women

Ironic that it is named after the city in #Turkey. theguardian.com/world/2021/mar…
2/. #Turkey’s withdrawal from the #IstanbulConvention is deeply worrying, coming at time when #COVID19 measures/lockdowns have led to a spike in reports of violence

Many women & girls trapped at home with their abusers or unable to easily access safety #VAWG #istanbulsoezlesmesi
3/ Turkey’s withdrawal from the #IstanbulConvention will have disastrous consequences for millions of women & girls & to organizations providing vital support to survivors of sexual assault & domestic violence

#Turkey should reconsider this awful decision

1/. 18 years ago as the bombs rained down on #Iraq as Operation Shock & Awe began, Eric Levy was in Baghdad in a power station

He'd gone to #Iraq with hundreds of human shields to try & stop an illegal war & to protect Iraqi civilians by staying in civilian infrastructure sites.
2/. Eric - now 92 - was one of about 80 human shields who stayed throughout the #IraqWar

"The war was illegal & immoral. We may have failed to stop the invasion, but by putting ourselves in harm’s way, we sent a clear message to the world"

Two weeks ago, President #Erdogan announced a Human Rights Action Plan

One of the people the Ministry of Justice had consulted about the Action Plan was the president of the Human Rights Association, Öztürk Türkdoğan

This morning, Türkdoğan was arrested. #Turkey #HumanRights
“The detention of Öztürk Türkdoğan is outrageous. With ink barely dry on 128-page Human Rights Action Plan announced by Pres Erdoğan two weeks ago, his arrest reveals this document isn't worth the paper it's written on" @amnesty #ÖztürkTürkdoğan #Turkey amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
"#ÖztürkTürkdoğan must be immediately & unconditionally released" @amnesty

His arrest makes a mockery of #Turkey’s hollow attempts to improve its image on human rights

The criminalisation of human rights defenders & of the Human Rights Association must end
