Russia's gov. regularly, and falsely, portrays Russia as a victim and that requires a “force response” to the United States and its democratic allies. “Russophobia” was used, in part, to justify its annexation of #Crimea. medium.com/dfrlab/putinat…
#Russia and its #Kremlin-backed media proxies have regularly denied or distorted historical narratives to cast Russia in a better light - including World War II and #Ukraine’s statehood. euvsdisinfo.eu/in-the-shadow-…
@StateDept 3. The Collapse of Western Civilization is Imminent
Among its oldest #disinformation tropes, #Russia pushes the false claim that Western civilization is failing because of its support for equality/multiculturalism. In this, Russia claims to be a bastion of “traditional values.”
@StateDept 4. Popular Movements are US-sponsored “Color Revolutions”
As pro-democracy uprisings occur around the world, #Russia asserts the US is instigating revolutions. These accusations target local/international civil society organizations & independent media. csis.org/analysis/russi…

@Michael1Sheldon Belarusian media reported that the military hardware arrived for “Allied Resolve” joint exercises. Regardless, the developments are concerning given their timing, scale, and origin. See the map below for the equipment's movement:
A Russian convoy arrived to Gomel with multiple rocket launcher and transporter-loader vehicles. In the footage, 11 transporter and a single BM-27 multiple rocket launcher are visible, along with support vehicles. Video showed the equipment headed toward the Ukrainian border.
The Proud Americans Patriot Network (PAPN) presents as a mundane conservative nonprofit with 501c4 registration. But its digital history ties it to the the Three Percenters movement and unlawful militias online. From @jaredlholt 🧵👇: medium.com/dfrlab/pennsyl…
At first glance, the PAPN seems like any other conservative advocacy organization centered on religious freedom, private property rights, and #2A. They solicit financial sponsorship, have a scholarship essay contest, and endorse local candidates.
However, a closer look at the group turned up clear links to the Three Percenter anti-government movement and found supporters attempting to recruit militia supporters nationwide. At one point, the group was selling several items with Three Percenter logos.
@jaredlholt@avaniyadav_ The first 3 deal w/ how militia groups are organizing online. In the fallout of #January6th, many groups are splintering, dissolving, & regrouping at a smaller scale - including rebranding & using @Facebook to attract users before migrating to alternative platforms like @telegram
@jaredlholt@avaniyadav_@Facebook@telegram Other militia groups have turned to hawking merchandise from sympathetic companies. One site, MyMilitia, uses a service called Flex Offers, offering users more than 45 affiliate links to retailers selling products likely to be popular w/ members: clothing, guns, ammo, tools, etc.
As fires rage across the western United States, doctored social media posts have gone viral primarily blaming leftist group #Antifa for setting fires forcing local authorities to divert resources to debunk these instances of #disinformation. medium.com/dfrlab/inauthe…
Mass reporting by locals has hampered coordination of relief efforts. Local law enforcement throughout the affected areas has taken to social media to urge the public to rely on official sources for information, and to refrain from sharing unverified rumors.
Several conservative Facebook groups and pages shared a screengrab of an alleged #antifa Twitter account, @ScarsdaleAntifa, who claimed that they had started the fires. Evidence suggests this is an inauthentic account created by a 4chan user to troll or confuse antifa supporters.
NEW: Facebook has removed more than 1,700 assets linked to two Egyptian digital marketing firms targeting audiences in Middle East and North Africa. Here's our EXCLUSIVE look at the assets that were deleted. medium.com/dfrlab/faceboo…
These assets were linked to two marketing firms, NewWaves and Flexell, that were at the center of two separate purges in August and October 2019, respectively.
The DFRLab corroborated the link to NewWaves but was unable to corroborate any direct connection to Flexell.
Over the past three years, the DFRLab has published extensively on political disinformation online. Today, we are happy to announce the “Dichotomies of Disinformation,” a project made possible by @Jigsaw to codify the many #disinformation campaigns we have reported on.
