Thread: 9 June 2022: Day 106 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Poland's President bluntly criticising #Germany ("doesn't give a damn about what's happening in Ukraine. They want ... cheap gas and oil") and #France. Rejects #Russia's nuclear blackmail as a good excuse for this behaviour.
At every single stage we have had this:
> "We can't supply x because training takes months"
> "We are now supplying x, and training that could have been completed by now is instead just beginning"
In the areas of Kherson that have been retaken, #Ukraine has found the same pattern as elsewhere: widespread #Russian war crimes against civilians, including old people, shot on the streets and in their own homes for no reason.
#Russia's colonies like Venezuela and Syria should have come under Western pressure from the first days of the #Ukraine invasion, instead the Russians are being allowed to further embed in #Nicaragua
Blunt from the Mayor of a town in Donetsk Oblast
#Russia moving military resources to Zaporizhzhia Oblast in #Ukraine, in combination with the "passportization" efforts, an attempt to prepare the way for conquest and annexation.
Exactly. It was the space provided by #NATO and the #EU nominally accepting #Ukraine's accession - but not yet - that let the #Russians act.
#Russia preparing the ground from Zaporizhzhia to the Donbas for annexations in #Ukraine.
Couldn't have happened to nicer chaps
Latest @DefenceHQ update: fighting around Severodonetsk in Luhansk continues, and #Russia seems to be trying to break the deadlock south of Izyum, where the front has been frozen since April "after #Ukrainian forces made good use of the terrain to slow Russia's advance". Image
Will take months at best for #Ukraine to clear the mines #Russia has left, even at this local area.
#Russia is planning to annex the two Donbas puppet republics (in Donetsk and Luhansk), plus Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, turning them into one federal district within Russia, after staging referendums in these zones of #Ukraine, according to Meduza sources. meduza.io/feature/2022/0…
Nothing surprising about this. #Russia has been blatantly signalling its intent to annex these occupied zones in #Ukraine for some time.
The two British volunteers (Sean Pinner and Aiden Aslin) and the Moroccan (Saadoun Brahim) captured in eastern #Ukraine have been sentenced to death by #Russia's puppet republic in Donetsk, according to Russian media.
Video of the sentencing, confirming that one of #Russia's puppet republics in eastern #Ukraine, the "Donetsk People's Republic", has sentenced three foreign volunteers to death: Sean Pinner, Aiden Aslin (both British), and Saadoun Brahim (Moroccan )
Doubtless, the people agitated about #Ukraine taking a democratic decision to move closer to the West because it "threatens #Russia in its backyard" will be absolutely furious at Russia building up into #Nicaragua as an overt move against the US.
Important context to what's happened today
Ironically, #Russia trying to stage show trials in #Ukraine as a "New Nuremberg" is more in-keeping with the spirit of the original than they let on: the Soviet involvement and conduct at those trials in 1945-46 annihilates any claim they had to justice
In a talk with young entrepreneurs and scientists today, Putin compared himself to Peter I (apparently his favourite Tsar) and all the land that Peter "returned" to #Russia, which was not recognised as Russian initially, even the new capital in Petersburg, but it was eventually. Image
A terrible messaging mess-up from a #Ukrainian MP. Rajavi leads a Marxist-Islamist cult, #MEK, that was the terrorist wing of the Revolution that brought the clerical despotism to power in #Iran. Nothing good comes of associating Ukraine with this rabble.
The "Head of the Donetsk People's Republic", Denis Pushilin, dismissed the "Prime Minister", Alexander Ananchenko, in office since Oct. 2018, and his "Cabinet", on 8 June 2022. Ananchenko said this was to assist "integration with the Russian Federation". rbc.ru/politics/08/06…
All part of #Russia's groundwork for annexing the occupied zones of #Ukraine
Pretty extraordinary piece of work: a day by day map of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
100 to 200 #Ukrainian soldiers are being killed every day, according to Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.

President Zelensky said on 1 June that Ukraine was suffering 60 to 100 military fatalities per day bbc.com/ukrainian/news…
#Lithuania's MPs demonstrate a considerable trolling capacity
Thread argues the #Russian rail repairs south of Izyum will help finish off Severodonetsk and Russian morale, after Mariupol, is improving. The slowing down of Western weapons deliveries to #Ukraine is hampering their resistance in the Donbas.
#pt: The advantages for #Ukraine once it trains up its manpower still holds true, as does the advantage for defenders in urban combat, but only if accompanied by the necessary heavy weapons, otherwise #Russia can make this into a meat grinder

Thread: 11 June 2022: Day 108 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update:

- #Russia is struggling to advance into the south of Severodonetsk city, despite concentrating artillery and air power on it

- Russia has resorted to unguided missiles because it is running short of precision weapons. #Ukraine's air defences holding. Image
#Russia is firing up to 50,000 artillery rounds per day and doing better at combined arms warfare. #Ukraine is running very low on ammunition for its Soviet-era weapons systems and Western weapons supplies are too slow and meagre to cover the gap. washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/…

Latest @DefenceHQ update:

- #Russia is again in control of "most" of Severodonetsk city in the Luhansk Oblast, but has failed to encircle the wider area

- Russia is failing to impose order or provide even basic services in occupied zones of #Ukraine, signs of a cholera outbreak Image

Review of Antony Beevor's new book about the Russian Civil War, says he leaves ideology out as a factor in explaining the cruelty of the war. It's the myth that will never die though to say the the "Whites' ideology" was "ferociously ... antisemitic". newstatesman.com/culture/books/…
There were nominal "White" units, especially in Ukraine, who carried out terrible pogroms in 1919. They did so in defiance of the "White" high command, which repeatedly condemned such behaviour and ordered the protection of Jews.
The problem for the "Whites" on this, as on so much else, was that it was not a unified army in a conventional sense, but a loose movement bound by anti-Bolshevism.

Was certain before checking that this person was American. Putting aside NATO being a Euro-American organisation and the existence of Turkey, this interpretation can only come from someone whose only frame of reference is American racial history and politics.

British freelance journalist Dom Phillips, a frequent contributor to @guardian, and his Indigenous traveling companion, Bruno Pereira, have gone missing in the far north-west of #Brazil, near the tri-border zone with Peru and Colombia, known to be lawless washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/…
#pt: "Western Amazonas state is a lawless region pervaded by violent criminals intent on destroying the forest and extracting resources from it. ... Phillips ... was researching a book project on conservation efforts in the forest. His work took him to Atalaia do Norte, ... "
"... the gateway to the Javari Valley, a massive forest considered the world’s largest repository of uncontacted peoples."

#Russia's Chief Rabbi has fled the country because the government tried to force him to support the eradication of #Ukraine. The Russian "denazification operation" has devastated Jewish communities in Ukraine and is now de-Jewing Russia, too.
