/14. 📜Powerful new report to the #UN General Assembly by the @SRClimateChange Ian Fry makes crystal clear that #LossAndDamage from #ClimateChange is causing a litany of #HumanRights impacts. 🧵
/14. In its introduction, the report highlights the inequality at the heart of the #ClimateCrisis: "50% of countries are responsible for 86 % of the cumulative global CO2 emissions", #AtmosphericColonization, and why #ClimateReparations are being demanded for #LossAndDamage.
/14. Chapter three "#LossAndDamage: a litany of #HumanRights impacts" starts by highlighting that from a #HumanRights perspective #LossAndDamage is "closely related to the right to remedy and the principle of #Reparations".
/14. Then highlights that the @ifrc found that 97.6 million people were affected by climate- and weather-related disasters in 2019.
/14. Before detailing the different types of #LossAndDamage that are being caused by #ClimateChange disasters starting with #floods, #heavyrains (such as those happening in #Pakistan now) and strong winds. Photo Credit: Pakistan Humanitarian Aid Flood Relief
/14. Coastal #storms, #floods and #SeaLevelRise such as that which is being experienced by cities like #Jakarta, and small island states such as The #MarshalIslands. Image credit: www.internationalrivers.org/en/southeast-asia/
/14. #Droughts, such as those affecting #EastAfrica, that have claimed the lives of 650,000 people since 1970, mostly in countries least responsible for the #ClimateCrisis. Image credit: ©UNICEF Ethiopia/2022/Mulugeta Ayene
/14. And #ExtremeHeat, such as the June 2022 #HeatWave which stuck #India and #Pakistan, when at least 90 people were estimated to have died. Image Credit: Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 202
/14. The report then details the expected economic costs of #LossAndDamage from #ClimateChange and that the @V20Group's economies have been hit hard by the #ClimateCrisis losing about $525 billion in the past two decades owing to the impacts of #GlobalWarming.
/14. The Non-economic #LossAndDamage caused by #ClimateChange, including climate change #Displacement, the loss of life, human health, cultural heritage and sovereignty.
/14. Before highlighting the inadequacy of the available funding for #LossAndDamage and that the G77 & China (which represent 2/3rds of the world's population) proposal for a #LossAndDamage Finance Facility to was rejected by just a few developed countries at #COP26.
/14. And that when funding is provided it is provided at the whim of donor countries, often incurs more debt than and is woefully inadequate to address #LossAndDamage.
/14: Ending on recommendations, the @SRclimatechange suggests that the #UN General Assembly establish a #LossAndDamage Finance Facility and establish an interim financial window for funding urgent #LossAndDamage under the #GreenClimate Fund and much more!!!

“It has been three decades since we knew that the climate is an issue we should address. We know that it affects people, we know that it destroys communities. And we know that for example in my region it generates intergenerational trauma.” @adrianmb_cr
“Communities are not certain about their future in their own lands, they know that there has to be an answer for #LossAndDamage.” @adrianmb_cr
“However during these three decades, all that we have gotten from the @UNFCCC is silence. Silence that kills people. Silence that destroys cultures. Silence that turns communities into uninhabitable places that are dangerous for people.” @adrianmb_cr
