We reach Day 260 of #Russia's war on #Ukraine. They continue to go backwards after Wednesday's announcement that Putin's troops are evacuating #Kherson region west of the river.
This is the daily thread for Thursday. Catch up on the previous 24 hrs here:
#Russia's troops vulnerable when retreating across the river Dnipro in #Kherson oblast.
The daily UK report published before we know what happened last night with zero internet in the region amid reported fire on the Antonivskyi Bridge & other areas.
Again, expected and predicted yesterday.
First we saw a lone #Ukraine flag on a pylon in #Snihurivka (RU: #Snigirevka) but now confirmation the town has been liberated, to the delight of locals who remained.
For me there is a real fear that the soon to be liberated city will suffer an incessant wave of rocket attacks in coming weeks and months as #Russia tries to damage one of the few southern places almost unscathed thus far.
After all the pressure, @amnesty (which still hasn't published its promised report into anti-Ukraine content) says #Russia is likely guilty of "a crime against humanity" with its forced deportations of Ukrainian citizens.
The Klimovsky district, which borders #Ukraine, is now being connected to a back up line after "a 110 kW power transmission was blown up."
No cause given; as far as I know, no rockets reported in this area.
The "forgotten" American woman behind bars in #Russia is to be sent back to the US
A court in Ryazan ordered Sarah Krivanek to be detained for 30 days before deportation.
Krivanek complained she had endured conditions "like hell" in the pre-trial prison
A monument to Pushkin in #Odessa/#Odessa has been daubed with "Get Out"
The sculpture of #Russia's legendary poet was installed there in 1999 on the 200th anniversary of his birth.
In #Kherson the remaining Russian soldiers are still sabotaging things before they cross the river Dnipro.
Explosions recorded near #Kakhovka and it's already known the invaders blew up buildings at an energy company and a TV building next to the TV tower itself.
We now have all the gear you guys helped us buy in our Twitter fundraiser. My friend Misha/Mitch has done an amazing job in Krakow.
He'll be setting off from there tomorrow to drive to #Ukraine
Some happy soldiers will soon have good winter gear to help them defend the country.
Extraordinary reports coming in from #Kherson region where #Ukraine's armed forces may be picking off #Russia's fleeing troops at will.
Around 20,000 are still on the right bank with no quick exit possible. Repeated fire on the Antonivskyi bridge and Kakhovka take a heavy toll
It happened overnight, but only just managed to find a video of the blaze which looks substantial. The whole roof went up in flames, but no injuries reported.
#Ukraine Defence Minister @oleksiireznikov says 40,000 Russians may remain on the right bank of Kherson oblast & will need a week to escape.
A few fake/old photos being posted, but this I think is new & real of Ukr missiles/air defence in Chaplinskyi nr #Crimea
I've been told at least 6 HIMARS hit the #Antonivskyi bridge and surrounding ferries in #Kherson region. Contrary to some reports it has NOT collapsed.
I'm hearing #Ukraine's troops have reached #Chornobaivka (RU: #Chernobaevka) tonight. No more equipment for #Russia to lose here, but let's call this a celebratory meme to remember the other 40+ hits on the #Kherson suburb!
Small arms fire allegedly heard in #Kherson centre.
This does not necessarily mean street fighting between #Ukraine & #Russia. If there is fire it may well be Russian on Russian. I don't see any point Ukr troops engaging when they can just lob rockets at the crowds at the river.
I'm convinced #Putin is not going to the G20 for fear of a coup while he's abroad.
Meanwhile more good news for him to read alongside the body count from #Kherson tonight.
One of the biggest stories for #Ukraine is what's happening in the USA. As I type the Republicans look set to take control of the House, but with a very small majority, while the GOP looks likely to FAIL to take control of the Senate
Today's UK intel update reports on #Russia's defensive work in Occupied areas.
Even though I expect a retreat this week to behind the river Dnipro in #Kherson, liberating all of the region's territory will be very difficult because The Kremlin needs the land route to #Crimea.
It's not unusual for schools in #Russia (and #Ukraine actually) to have some elements of military awareness, including visits by soldiers pre-war, showing guns etc.
Now #Russia looks like making a new subject of military training compulsory for kids.
This is reported by the Terrorist State's news agency. Did someone tell them Russia stopped starving, freezing, raping, looting and killing civilians?😡
The news agenda is still dominated by one event in #Russia, where the first serious questions are being asked by "regular" (non liberal) families over military disasters.
It follows this wipeout of a new battalion of mobilised troops by #Ukraine's forces
