Thursday. Day 302 of #Russia's illegal war on #Ukraine begins where it's still Wednesday evening, with President Zelenskyy of #Ukraine about to address Congress in Washington DC.
He needs Congress to continue to approve US aid for the war.
A busy news day yesterday - if you missed anything, catch up by clicking and scrolling down here:
While we wait for #Zelenskyy's speech on Capitol Hill to start, I see Liz Cheney sitting with Democrats!
Meanwhile in #Ukraine, during an air raid warning in #Odesa (RU: #Odessa) explosions are reported in the region - not in the city itself.
However it may be air defence.
A long, long, long standing ovation for Volodymyr Zelenskyy as he enters Congress.
Someone shouts "Slava Ukraini"...
What an astonishing U.S. welcome from all sides of the House for @ZelenskyyUa
As good as for Churchill!
Nancy Pelosi struggling to get the show on the road.
Puh-lease... someone please tell Nancy, it's not "THE Ukraine"
That is a Russian term designed to denigrate #Ukraine as a region rather than a sovereign nation.
Zelenskyy warns about #Iran's involvement in the war. "That's how one terrorist finds another... It's only a matter of time before one of your other allies gets hit by these drones."
Zelenskyy "We will PUT-IN place everyone who defies freedom"
Zelenskyy: In a couple of days we will celebrate Christmas, probably by candlelight. Not because it's romantic. But because we have no power and heat."
Zelenskyy:
"Standing here I am reminded of the words of Franklin D Roosevelt: 'The American people in their righteous mind will win an absolute victory. The Ukrainian people will win too, absolutely.'"
At the start of his speech, President Zelenskyy welcomed the #Ukraine diaspora inside the Chamber, who were also given a standing ovation.
Zelenskyy was in great form yet again. A powerful orator, much improved English, careful to sprinkle historical U.S. references in there, along with repeated thanks to both parties in the country.
While #Zelenskyy was speaking to Congress, more bombs rained down on #Kherson.
#Russia pretends it wants to liberate the people, but all they can do is try to kill and intimidate and freeze. Power went off in Kherson after one of the rockets struck.
Relatively quiet in Ukraine for the moment, so as I need some sleep, I'll sign off for a while, back in a few hours.
Thank you for all your positive words and support, and a special word of thanks for M.K. for donating for a coffee (link in my bio)💙💛
I imagine it's rather embarrassing for "mighty" #Russia that their army is now being trained by "little" #Belarus.
British Intel daily update:
Long predicted and the day has arrived.
100,000 Russian soldiers dead, trying to wipe #Ukraine off the map.
Add on dead Mercenaries and badly injured and we are likely talking about 350,000 out of the war if Kyiv's figures are accurate.
The Washington Post says Pres Zelenskyy rejected two out of three possible starting points for negotiations with #Russia
The options were that 🇷🇺troops: 1) Leave all Ukraine territory 2) Leave 'mainland'🇺🇦 but stay in #Crimea 3) Return to 23 Feb positions washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
Another nuclear power plant generator in #Ukraine has been connected to the country's network, but there are still huge problems.
The front line towns and villages and #Kyiv are worst affected, with many residents in the capital restricted to just 1-2 hours electricity a day.
It's so heartening to receive your words of support and especially the "coffee" gifts.
So extra special thanks today to MK💙, Caroline H💛, Jill💙 and Joanne G💛
I reckon I spend on average 9-10 hours a day doing this, so 28,000 hours and counting, with zero days off. Love🇺🇦
In its' daily briefing, #Russia claims its Air Force fighter jets have shot down two #Ukraine MiG-29s and an Mi-8 helicopter in #Donetsk.
There's also a whole host of other stuff they claim to have destroyed, so which is true and which is fiction is almost impossible to say.
More bad news for #Putin - the ruble has started devaluing quite appreciably.
In the last 4 days #Russia's currency lost over 10% of its value as wholesale fuel prices fall quite dramatically.
Highly embarrassing that they let the cruiser "Admiral Kuznetsov" start burning while being repaired in dry dock in Murmansk
News sites reported 20 people were evacuated, but the State then hurriedly claimed there was no fire, just a small blaze nearby; no damage
#Russia's Minister of Sport continues to talk-up the idea of the country leaving #UEFA to join football's Asian Confederation
Oleg Matytsin says "any format that will serve to develop multilateral relations, and increase competition in Russian football will be beneficial."
A Ukraine-EU summit has been arranged for 6 weeks' time.
Zelenskyy will meet President of the EC @CharlesMichel & @vonderleyen on 3 February, venue yet to be decided.
Priceless! Russia's fantasist propagandists have forgotten recent history! "Zelenskyy's out of #Ukraine for a week so we need to take Kyiv"
In a week you just about took #Hostomel, then lost it!
Olga Skabeeva is the deranged Russian TV presenter.
Oh here's a photo of the fire that was not a fire on board the Admiral Kuznetsov near #Murmansk (see earlier tweet)
As we can see everything is going to plan. Definitely no smoke. Great repair job boys!
General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of #Ukraine's Armed Forces, wants to present #Putin with this certificate for reaching 100,000 dead Russian soldiers.
Maybe a gold one for one million?
In occupied #Melitopol', military equipment which has long stood in local schools is suddenly on the move.
Rumours of preparations for an evacuation continue. Before the Kherson retreat many said it was a trap and wouldn't happen. I'm hoping for a repeat.
#Ukraine is braced for a massive pre-Christmas attack following #Zelenskyy's speech in Washington.
Quoting their own sources in Intelligence, @pravda_eng says all available Cruise missiles with a 500km range will be fired, likely tomorrow.
More than a coffee Duncan, a Christmas gift!
Cheers!
In #Kyiv they may not have much electricity, but looks like they've got a generator at the Vernadsky National Library, where they congratulate #Russia's army on the achievement of reaching 100,000
President @Zelenskyy has also met the Polish President again today.
"On the way home, I met with a friend of Ukraine - President of #Poland Andrzej Duda. We reviewed the year, which brought historic challenges. We discussed strategic plans for the future and bilateral relations"
"A new form of torture" #Ukraine's Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets' posts on Telegram about psychological harm inflicted on Prisoners of War
It's alleged Russia brings them out for a fictitious exchange, then tells POWs Ukraine refused the exchange and locks them up again
Those amazing guys+girls from @Ukrzaliznytsia are keeping the "Santa train" running to schedule.
The St Nicholas express is bringing joy to frontline and liberated areas. Wonderful photos here today when the train arrived at Zanki station in #Kharkiv region
Two missiles were fired at #Kharkiv from #Russia's Belgorod region.
One rocket was shot down by air defence. The other is said to have landed just outside the city, although leaders stress there was not a single call to any emergency service. The air raid warning continues.
The US Senate has passed the $1.7 trillion govt funding bill, which includes the aid to #Ukraine.
The bill moves to the House where it must pass by the end of the week to avert a shutdown.
Many Republicans supported the plan, hours after Zelenskyy's impassioned speech.
Renée and Michelle the latest supporters of my work.
Thank you so much ladies.
You've all been extremely kind today.
Love to all 💙💛
The bastards that committed the biggest single atrocity in the war today destroyed the final bits of of the scene of the crime.
16 March 2022 #Russia hit the theatre in #Mariupol. Today it was brought down by the occupiers.
Officially between 300-600 died. I think nearly 1,000
The news I brought early yesterday that #Wagner troops had been pushed back in #Bakhmut has been confirmed this evening by infamous Igor Girkin/Strelkov.
He says they've been forced right out of the built-up area "to the garbage dumps and industrial zone."
Also an update on another of yesterday's big stories:
Dmitry Rogozin is now seriously ill and has been urgently transferred to #Moscow for treatment.
Doctors in Donetsk and even Rostov could not treat the wounds. His wife Tatyana also suffered shellshock
So what's special about 21 December? Well it's the solstice so days get longer from today.
It's also the day Pres Zelenskyy went abroad for the first time in the war.
And, the day #Ukraine's tally of tanks destroyed reached 3,000 (tomorrow a bigger landmark!)
I don't often retweet my own stuff, but this came through late last night and likely got a bit lost in the news around #Ukraine's President's trip abroad.
The @UN stands accused of "yielding to #Russia's threats" for not investigating #Iran's role in the drone attacks which are causing the civilian population unimaginable suffering
Many in #Kyiv were woken by loud explosions this morning, especially two blasts in the central area of #Ukraine's capital.
Mayor @Vitaliy_Klychko reports 15 of #Iran's Shaheed killer drones were shot down. But one did hit more critical infrastructure. Two injuries reported.
Sunday's #RussiaUkraine news thread begins here on Day 298 of the war.
Welcome along and Happy Hanukkah if you celebrate this evening.
Incidentally, the New York Times quotes Putiin calling #Ukraine's Jewish leader #Zelenskyy as "an assistant to Nazism"🍲🫖⚫️(no kettle emoji😂)
It's nice to report another fairly quiet start to Day 298 in #Ukraine.
If you missed anything from Saturday, click and scroll here:
So let's start today with news of explosions inside #Russia and on #Crimea
First Crimea - they may try to pass off loud bangs in #Simferopol & #Bakhchisarai as "air defence working". But it seems more than that, one report of several military trucks and fuel trucks were damaged.
Speaking of loud bangs, this was heard in #Belgorod region in #Russia.
Maybe the Russians are fearful of a breakaway Republic? The last one to try that was #Chechnya and its capital got razed to the ground.
First a story causing concern in #Ukraine where rumours abound that President #Zelenskyy's entourage is so worried by the popularity of the Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhny, they want to replace him.
