AA says:
" #evictions have been consistent and a gradual rise to normality - which is about 4500 evictions a month"
@SaidSharbini asks
"do you know how many people will be impacted by this bill - or how many people that receive TANF, SSI, or SSDI that are currently evicted?"
the apartment association, friends their answer:
"we don't know"
This is a bill they are testifying in opposition of
The apartment association hates that mediation has to happen before an eviction is filed by a land lord against a tenant for people that receive TANF, SSI, and SSDI.
@lorenaforsenate sets the records straight - and addresses the harmful language that the apartment association said earlier - when mentioning explicit discrimination as a land lords right.
These words are harmful when they are said and they are not corrected often. Thank you ✨
Colorado association of realtors is confirming that small mom and pop landlords will not be hurt by this bill and they are neutral (love that)🔥 #copolitcs
Rep. Stephanie Luck is asking if this bill will decrease housing supply - and if, in fact - cash strapped Coloradans will be hurt by this bill
Very odd take, cause the most cash strapped are Coloradans on TANF, SSDI & SSI
Sarah Windholz is testifying against the bill - she says requiring a mediation process will require more time to get an eviction done - so that makes it hard to evict tenants - they want to be able to evict tenants faster
Tony Paxton is testifying on behalf of the mobile Park Home landlords (hates the bill)
@repgabeevans asks for the data that Paxton referenced regarding landlords that have left the sector because mobile home parks have more protections for tenants
Surprise - she has no data
Hillary Jorgensen - from @CCDC501c3 is here and we all already feel better 🔥
"ppl with disabilities need to have reasonable accommodations, that required mediation can absolutely support that"
Take it from the biggest #advocates for ppl w/ disabilities
Next we hear from Jessica Spangler - a mom of an autistic son, who faced an unethical eviction, and couldn't get support till she contacted COVID eviction defense fund
This has happened to her son 4 times in the last year 2 years
CCLP says -
"providing 30 days will provide tenants with enough time to secure housing" #copolitics
Next we have the most important testifier tonight - mom of 2 who received TANF & lost her home & her children through the cycle that eviction does to a family that faces it
We know that young mothers I urban areas are the most impacted by #eviction & that's why its YES on HB1120
We heard from @COCoalition - they make the point that people who need support (like folks they serve who are houseless) they have seen the mediation work!
We are hearing from another tenant that lost her home, who was on disability income, she didn't have $ to move & lost her kid (cause income is restricted for TANF, SSI & SSDI tenants) #copolitics
She is saying that the mediation would of changed everything for her
Pass 1120
Thankfully @WoodrowForCO is correcting a lot of testimony we heard today from the apartment association - when they didn't give any data he asked for on public record today
Thank you for setting it straight #eviction does get resolved & both landlords & tenants need this bill
Here at #FairWorkweek hearing with sponsors starting us off strong - @SerenaForCO explains that single parents & working parents are left with a CPS call when they don't have predictable work schedules to pick their kids up
@SerenaForCO reminds us corporate lobbyists are out numbering us.
@EmilyForCO "We are here today to address unpredictable hours... which means unpredictable pay... 1/3rd of workers in Colorado who are in the most impacted sectors - couldn't cover an emergency" #copolitics
"we continue to create communities where workers can thrive... studies show that fair scheduling builds trust for employees and employers" #copolitics
"workers who have a say in their schedule are more productive" says @EmilyForCO
Opening is Pam Reséndiz, director of CO Jobs with Justice.
"We work hard and we deserve to know when we’re going to work and how much we’re going to make." #HB1118#COLeg#COPolitics
Next is Britany Lopez, a student from MSU Denver. Talks about how hard it is to work to juggle classes and unpredictable scheduling while also needing to help her family. #HB1118#COLeg#COPolitics
@VigilForHD16 gives us a lesson on group level o-zone - "which is a combination of heat and toxins, and they mostly come from oil and gas operations - and then transportation is the next big one" #copolitics
