#MahatmaGandhi had a complex relationship with Maharashtra, where his mentor Gopal Krishna Gokhale hailed from.

This thread is about #Gandhi and his relationship with #Marathi (and #Maharashtra)

#thread
#Maharashtra produced some of his staunchest supporters like Acharya Vinoba Bhave and Sitaram ‘Appasaheb’ Patwardhan, who was referred to as the ‘Konkan Gandhi,’ and his most bitter critics, like Dr #BabasahebAmbedkar and V.D. #Savarkar.
Eventually, a man from #Maharashtra--#NathuramGodse, killed #Gandhi.
In South Africa, #Gandhi acquired functional knowledge of #Tamil as he had to work among the Tamil indentured labourers. He also learnt #Urdu.
After returning to India, he decided to learn #Marathi in 1915. In December that year, he replied to a letter by an office bearer of the Servants of India Society, #Pune, in Marathi, that too in his own hand.
The letter from the Society was in English. Bapu would read his reply aloud in Gujarati and Kakasaheb Kalelkar would translate it into Marathi.
Kalelkar says that he asked Gandhi to sign off with the standard line: Lobh asawa hi vinanti (May your love or warmth continue). Gandhi interpreted the word 'Lobh' as greed and replied: 'Actually, it should be Lobh nasava' Kalelkar explained that Lobh means love or warmth.
Later, #Gandhiji realised that there were #Maharashtrian families in his ashram and started reading 'Manache Shlok' by Samartha Ramdas Swami in his daily prayer meeting.
However, he could not attain fluency when it came to spoken #Marathi.
During his interment at the #Yerwada jail in #Pune, #Gandhi translated seven abhangs of Saint Tukaram. They were translated from Marathi to English. He was deeply influenced by this poet-saint.
In the Yerwada jail, Gandhi asked Kalelkar to teach him #Marathi. Kalelkar taught him using textbooks. Gandhi made substantial progress. When it came to handwriting, he was influenced by the references in 'Dasbodh' written by Samartha Ramdas to how it should be.
Kalelkar's wife Kaki would always speak to #Gandhi in #Marathi. This would be translated into Gujarati by Mahadevbhai Desai, his personal assistant.
Though it is (wrongly) believed that #LokmanyaTilak and #MahatmaGandhi were poles apart, #Tilak too had referred to #Gandhi as a #Mahatma in his introduction to #Gandhiji's biography written by Avantikabai Gokhale in 1918. This is the first biography of Gandhi in #Marathi.

An elitist, upper-class & upper-caste dominated discourse often equates the sense of being 'Marathi' to those who have #Marathi-sounding surnames. But the sense of a #Marathiidentity transcends these boundaries. "Non-Maharashtrians" have enriched #Marathi literature & social life
Some examples:
16th-17th century bhakti- warkari saint Shaikh Muhammed of Shrigonda in Ahmednagar district, a Muslim by birth, wrote abhangs and books in #Marathi.

#Maharashtra #Marathiculture
He says:
Because of Gopala, I have transcended norms of purity...
Shaikh Muhammed may be an avindh (an Abrahamic or one whose ears were not pierced like those of Hindus), but Govinda resides in my heart.

Thousands braved the pouring rain for his darshan. Women did their artis before the wicks were extinguished. Tilak's procession to Girgaon Chowpatty was joined by around 2 lakh people including mill workers. One of the bearers of his mortal coils was #MahatmaGandhi & the other

The #RSS & Left inhabit two different ideological spheres. But Gopal Mukund (Balaji) Huddar, the 1st general secretary of the #RSS made a transformation to being a Marxist. He fought the Spanish civil war & joined the #CPI
#Maharashtra #history #Nagpur #Spain #SpanishCivilWar
#BalajiHuddar was born on 17 June 1902 at Mandla (Madhya Pradesh). The family's original surname was Rauldev. They were known as 'Huddar' as they were Huddedars or noblemen of the Gond kings in Vidarbha.
Since the age of 4, he was brought up by Umabai, a rich widow from the Udhoji family, who had saved him while he was drowning. Though this was done with the consent of his birth parents, his formal adoption had not been done. This took place when he was 40! #BalajiHuddar

#Netaji #SubhasChandraBose and his #INA launched their struggle against the #British with the help of #Japan in #WorldWarII. But did you know that Indian #nationalists & #revolutionaries had deep ties with #Japan even earlier?
#history #LokmanyaTilak #Maharashtra #IndoJapanties
Indian revolutionaries were eager to go to #Japan and #America to gain knowledge in manufacturing arms and bombs to be used against the British rulers.
#freedommovement #nationaliststruggle
The rise of #Japan as a military and industrial power and the crushing defeat inflicted by it on #Russia in the Russo-Japanese war (1904-5) inspired Indian nationalists. The country was also seen as a counter-weight to the European powers.

30 October 1883 marks the death anniversary of #SwamiDayanandSaraswati. This is a thread on the links between the #AryaSamaj & the #HinduMahasabha & the #RSS. It will also explain how the Samaj contributed to the growth of the #Sangh

#history #Hindutva #SanghParivar #BJP
The #AryaSamaj was founded on 10 April 1875 at Bombay (#Mumbai) by Swami #DayanandSaraswati. This monotheistic order laid stress on the values laid down in the #Vedas & was against idol worship.
As a counter to the proselytizing Abrahamic faiths like Christianity and Islam, the #AryaSamaj launched a reconversion campaign called #shuddhi. As the #HinduMahasabha grew in the 1920s, many #AryaSamaj leaders joined it. Shuddhi became one of the Mahasabha's driving forces
