This is why I do not think much of #SubhasChandraBose

Read this thread about the brutal treatment of #Malaya #Tamils by the Japanese in building the #DeathRailway

Bose wanted to take help from the Japanese in "liberating" #India.

Why would the Japanese ever care about "liberating" India from #British rule?

The #Japanese were imperialists. They wanted to conquer all of Asia and the Pacific.

They had already annexed #Manchuria in 1931, and everyone knew about their brutal treatment of the #Chinese.

The Japanese followed this up with the #RapeOfNanjing in 1937. This was followed by the establishment of #Unit731 in the city of #Harbin in Northeast #China, scene of one of the most egregious #CrimesAgainstHumanity in history, carried out by the #ImperialJapaneseArmy

#Netaji #SubhasChandraBose and his #INA launched their struggle against the #British with the help of #Japan in #WorldWarII. But did you know that Indian #nationalists & #revolutionaries had deep ties with #Japan even earlier?
#history #LokmanyaTilak #Maharashtra #IndoJapanties
Indian revolutionaries were eager to go to #Japan and #America to gain knowledge in manufacturing arms and bombs to be used against the British rulers.
#freedommovement #nationaliststruggle
The rise of #Japan as a military and industrial power and the crushing defeat inflicted by it on #Russia in the Russo-Japanese war (1904-5) inspired Indian nationalists. The country was also seen as a counter-weight to the European powers.

What #Savarkar got was not a 'stipend' or 'pension,' as Congress alleged, but an allowance from the British Raj. Others who got such an allowance from the British Raj were the Bose brothers Subhas & Sarat Chandra, Mahatma Gandhi & so many other Indian freedom fighters. A small 🧵
When the #British imprisoned #Indians or held them as detenus or internees, usually in cases where there were no charges & no trials (as when Savarkar was interned in Ratnagiri from 1924 to 1937), they paid a monthly allowance to them for 'loss of income' so they (in terms of..
food etc) and/or their families could maintain themselves. Govt statue allowed them to have money from the public purse for this purpose. When the Raj, in the early 1930s, decided to drastically cut these allowances, Subhas Chandra Bose...

A little-known nugget about Netaji #SubhashChandraBose. At a time when most politicians supported prohibition, he was among the few who opposed the idea. #Netaji #SubhasChandraBose #history
The Bombay Presidency Government under Balasaheb Kher (Congress) had decided to impose prohibition from 1 August 1939. Netaji, who had then had quit as the Congress president, stood by the Parsi community which was opposed to prohibition & criticised the govt for this decision.
However, #MahatmaGandhi was upset at this & issued a statement from Abbotabad (he was touring the NWFP). Earlier #MahatmaPhule had pointed to the adverse social effects of liquor. #LokmanyaTilak had joined forces with Muslims & Christian missionaries to clamp down on liquor vends

Many know where Bengal’s bravest son, #SubhasChandraBose - Netaji – lived in #Calcutta, as he famously escaped house arrest from his home at Elgin Road, in 1940. But not many know where Netaji’s ancestral home or ‘Desh-er-bari’ is. 1/10
Now called ‘Subhasgram’ in honour of #Netaji, it is just 25 km south of #Kolkata, in a village formerly known as Kodalia. Simple and elegant, the two-storey homestead is being restored. 2/10
Among Netaji’s ancestors was Mahipati Bose, who was granted a jagir by the Sultan of #Bengal, Hussain Shah, near the Bose ancestral home in the early 16th century. His grandson Gopinath Bose was also granted a jagir in Purandarpur, named after his title ‘Purandar Khan’. 3/10

(1/6) STORY OF ASHA: Born in Japan. Fought for Swaraj with Netaji.🇯🇵🇮🇳

Asako, Asha Sahay Choudhry, was born in Kobe, Japan, to Indian parents who fought for India's independence during British rule. (cont.)

(2/6) She is a woman who seems to symbolise the cooperation between India and Japan during WWII. She wished for the independence of her mother country, which she had not yet seen, who were instrumental in Subhas Chandra Bose's efforts to work with the Japanese Army. (cont.) Image
(3/6)With a burning desire, she volunteered for the 'Indian National Army Women's Corps'.
Through a fortunate connection, I had the opportunity to meet 94-year-old Asako and her family on three occasions last month. (cont.) Image

Savarkar was brutally tortured, hung up naked and he had to ease himself in that state in his cell. I hate to compare sufferings of freedom fighters, but we all know how humanly Gandhiji was treated when he was imprisoned.

This was the emaciated state to which #SubhasChandraBose was reduced to after imprisonment in jails, including the notorious Mandalay jail. He nearly died. Would take years to regain health.
Only two front ranking Congress leaders were sent to Mandalay jail-- Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Subhas Bose. Interestingly, there was one revolutionary who was imprisoned with Bose in Mandalay jail. Same revolutionary also spent time in Kala Paani when Savarkar was lodged there.

Senior journo Mohan K Tikku's Russian frnd was advised by Russian embassy in early 2000s that seeking answers to questions about #SubhasChandraBose's fate would not do any good to anybody. "It was best to let things be as they were." Similar claim made in early 1970s (pic). 1/n
Despite repeated demands, Govt of India formally took up the issue of Netaji with Russia only around 1990. Chacha Nehru dodged it all his life. Modi govt promised to take it up at highest level (Putin) but there is nothing in public domain to suggest that it was done. 2/n
Sushma Swaraj as foreign minister did speak to her Russian counterpart in 2015, but the details are top secret. In 2019, Govt let out that Russians have said they are unable to find any documents about Bose in their archives -- which is not believable. 3/n

There is a long-standing conspiracy theory that as India's ambassador to Soviet Russia, Dr #SarvepalliRadhakrishnan came to know about the existence of #SubhasChandraBose there. God forbid this should be true! 🙏 (1/n) #HappyTeachersDay #सर्वपल्ली_राधाकृष्णन #शिक्षकदिवस Image
Similar conspiracy theory exists about Pt Nehru's sister Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, who was India's first mission head in Moscow. After he returned from Moscow, Dr #Radhakrishnan became India's first Vice President and was later bestowed with first Bharat Ratna with 3 others. (2/n)
Indian position is that #SubhasChandraBose died in Taiwan (whose govt denies it) and so Netaji couldn't have been in Russia thereafter. But a big chunk of Indians do not accept it, just as they do not buy the official propaganda that British left India because of Ahimsa. (3/n)

On 2 September 2017 over 1,600 people turned up at my Netaji mystery talk at Dayanad auditorium in Latur. Goes on to show that decades of official propaganda notwithstanding, #SubhasChandraBose retains massive popularity -- at least in this part of Maharashtra. 🙏🙏🙏 ImageImageImageImage
This talk was not recorded, but my September 2019 talk on the Shastriji at the same venue was. The turnout was again very very good. Vivekanand Sanskar Sanstha, Latur was the organiser of both talks 🙏

My two books are available in Marathi

this is a longer version of what i tweeted yesterday. Pls RT because those in power will not commemorate this event. All they can do is to remember Mahatma Gandhi all the time.

I never understood why many Indians support #subhashchandrabose's attempts to form an alliance with Hitler & Mussolini to fight the British in India. Do you think Hitler would have come in, ended British raj and waltzed out with a box of Laddus?

Seriously #Asking. Do explain.
Ok. But you didn't answer my question. There must be a conclusion to your thought process. I am just interested to know what it is.
POLL on #subhashchandrabosejayanti

#Subhaschandrabose tried to ally with Hitler and Mussolini to drive the British out of India.

Do you think if this alliance happened, Hitler would have freed India and then left us in peace?
