The #G7HiroshimaSummit seems to be unusually productive, with the leaders agreeing on a very large list of actions. Among them, combined with new bilateral US/Australia pacts, are possibly profound energy & #climate resolutions.
2/I'll quote a few examples from the Joint Declaration.
- accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs ), recognizing that reducing poverty & tackling the #climate and nature crisis go hand in hand;
MORE
3/ - preserve the planet by accelerating the decarbonization of our energy sector & the deployment of renewables, end plastic pollution & protect the oceans;
- deepen cooperation through Just Energy Transition Partnerships, the #Climate Club & new Country Packages for...
MORE
4/ Forest, Nature & #Climate;
- We will work w/our intl partners to achieve a world that is human-centered, inclusive & resilient, leaving no one behind
- We welcome Climate Resilient Debt Clauses to enhance the safety net for borrowers facing the impacts of climate change.
MORE
5/ - We emphasize the importance of a disaster preparedness approach & investment in human capital, goods & infrastructure that contribute not only to “risk transfer” but also to “risk reduction,” resulting in the strengthening of anticipatory actions.
MORE
6/ - We remain committed to holding ourselves accountable, in an open & transparent way, for the promises we have made.
- Our planet is facing unprecedented challenges from the triple global crisis of #climate change, #biodiversity loss and #pollution ...We are steadfast...
MORE
7/ in our commitment to the Paris agreement, keeping a limit of 1.5°C global temperature rise w/in reach through scaled up action in this critical decade, halting & reversing biodiversity loss by 2030, & ensuring energy security, whilst leveraging synergies
MORE
8/ - our goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 at the latest remains unchanged.
- Accordingly, we call on all Parties...to revisit & strengthen the 2030 targets & publish or update their LTSs as soon as possible & well before UNFCCC-#COP28UAE
MORE
9/ - We reaffirm commitment to the Global Methane Pledge & we will step up efforts to collectively reduce global anthropogenic #methane emissions by at least 30% below 2020 levels by 2030
- reaffirm our strong commitment to supporting developing countries’ energy transitions
MORE
10/ - We reaffirm the important role of high integrity carbon markets & carbon pricing to foster cost-efficient reductions in emission levels, drive innovation & enable a transformation to net zero, through the optimal use of a range of policy levers to price carbon.
MORE
11/ There is much more in the #G7HiroshimaSummit Declaration about energy transformation & #climate change. Sure, summits are bags of words. But leaders' public commitments can be used at home to hold them accountable.
Let's clear: NONE of the above would happen under #Trump .

Boy, I goofed. I confused in my memory banks two different original outbreaks -- Lassa and Marburg, mis-recalling things I wrote nearly 30 years ago.
I apologize. And here, I will quote a section of THE COMING PLAGUE referring to #Marburg in a thread.

There are 6 major subtypes of #Marburg which is a bat-carried hemorrhagic RNA virus. The subtypes seem to have different fatality rates in humans -- up to 100%. The current strains have not yet been genotyped, so it is unclear what is going on, @WHO says.

It's possible these are coincident events.
It's also possible something is going on w/bat populations across equatorial Africa, which would be worrying. @WHO 's Dr. Abdi Rahman Mahamoud just said in presser there are "more questions than answers."
