The recent events are making me scared. Here is a thread of things my parents taught me so that I could keep myself safe.
1. At night, be aware of shadows. It's the first thing you can take note of when someone is following you.
Don't get too close to parked cars but you can utilize them to see who is following you by taking a glance at their reflective surface.
When people ask for directions, keep yourself a few meters away. They might suddenly grab you and drag you in. Always be ready to run.
Be wary of lost children. They might lead you to someplace dangerous. At times like this, kindness can get you killed.
Some of my friends carry a small blade. May it be cutters, a small knife, etc. It's handy and can be used to scare people away.
Google how to make pepper spray. Keep it close. Carry around umbrellas, even on sunny days.
Never trust strangers, even those wearing uniforms. You can be cordial. You can be respectful. But never trust them.
Never, ever, ever, assume that you are safe. If people can get killed in their homes, nowhere is safe. Be alert. Be wary.
