Here's a little secret about some GOPers and science. They're not science deniers, they're scientist-haters. There's a difference. /1
They see - rightly - some scientists as trying to use expert knowledge to force policy conclusions they prefer. /2
They know that the science is sturdy, but they disagree with the policy conclusions. Which they have a right to do. /3
So instead, they play dumb, and attack the science as bunk. This is all kabuki: each side in the debate knows what it's doing. /4
Moreover, here's another ugly reality: liberals deny science when it pisses them off, too. (The study on this is in the book.) /5
But conservatives, stupidly, have equated pissing on scientists with pissing on science and thus pissing on "elites." /6
Some GOPers are loons. So are a fair number of liberal Dems. But the "science" debate isn't really about science - and never was. /7x
