Did you know 3.4 million people live on me? And guess what? They are Americans! Puerto Ricans are natural-born US citizens. /2
The US acquired PR in the late 1800’s, but I’m not a State – just a territory. Maybe that’s why you ignore me, @realDonaldTrump? /3
DYK that in a referendum this year (2017), my inhabitants overwhelmingly showed a preference for statehood! ❤️🇺🇸🇵🇷 /4
Even though Puerto Ricans are US citizens, they don’t get to vote for President. Now THAT’S probably why you ignore me, @POTUS. /5
Puerto Ricans also don’t get representation in Congress. Otherwise, maybe legislators would be helping us more. ☹️ /6
Did I mention Puerto Ricans pay US taxes? In 2009 alone, Puerto Ricans paid over $3 billion into the US treasury. /7
Things are a little imbalanced. Puerto Ricans pay into Social Security… /8
…but they can’t access SSI, and Puerto Rico gets a pathetic rate of reimbursement for Medicaid. ☹️ /9
Puerto Ricans have been subject to military draft for a century, and many have fought and died for American freedom. /10
So that’s a little bit about Puerto Rico. Oh wait – one more thing: did you hear about Hurricane Maria? /11
Last week, I was hit by a historically powerful storm that knocked out power on the whole island. /12
The lights might not be coming back on for months. 45% of Puerto Ricans lived below the poverty line BEFORE the storm, especially kids: /13
We’re talkin’ 3.4M Puerto Ricans w/o power or clean water. Los Angeles has about as many ppl. Would 🇺🇸 care more if this happened in LA? /14
Well that’s not really fair. Puerto Ricans are US citizens too. You should take care of your brothers & sisters in need. /15
I have to admit, we have a humanitarian crisis on the island. And it will go on for a long time. /16
