I can't think of another period in recent Western history characterized by greater degree of political idiocy, amateurism, & self-sabotage.
Yes, rise of far-right/illiberalism major crisis facing West. But as important: sheer incompetence of existing establishment across EU/US.
What links Trump, Brexit, debacle in Catalonia is embrace of ignorance, incompetence as guiding political values. It's astounding.
That is, step back from individuals at fault (i.e. Trump, May, Puigdemont) wonder instead at massive cabal of enablers and fellow travelers.
These are true systems, regimes of idiocy. Thousands of technicians (& millions of voters) employed in service of auto-defenestration.
And I add: all of us experts, analysts, scholars etc who treat any of this as anything other than absolute self-immolation are complicit.
As much as we need revitalization of civil society, popular participation, debate, we need to begin shaming peddlers of pol infantilism.
This is where free press is key. We need media to dismantle such insane, self-destructive narratives and not merely "report" on them.
Every reporter, in any of these pressers/interviews, who doesn't keeping pressing *how* plans like CAT independence are to work is failing.
Unless as you're as ignorant as the proponents of these ideas, you have responsibility to ask for figures, data, concrete policies, agendas.
And if you are satisfied w speeches & press releases, you're not a journalist, you're a glorified spokesperson. Quit and join a PR firm.
Point being: it was all theater until these lunatics actually took power. Now ppl are starting to get hurt, to die, bc of this ignorance.
So it's not about any of us "who told you so." But we're here now, ruled by the worst among us, who're leading us twds genuine catastrophe.
We need to collectively rage against dimming of rational thought, debate or we really will be consumed by Trump's et al "fire and fury." /x
