I believe that taste is one of the most powerful, precious, fragile things in the known Universe and should be cultivated accordingly
Taste gave us the Sistine Chapel, the iPhone, Hamilton, every great novel, TV show... I'm sure it has a role in science&engineering too
The crazy thing is that hardly anybody encourages you to develop it. School, society, etc are designed to discourage u from developing taste
It doesn't have to be malicious. Its mostly innocuous and indifferent. Taste is initially costly, tedious, messy and expensive to develop
Another funny-annoying thing is - when people manage to cultivate taste for decades, we worship them as geniuses. This is bad in many ways
First of all, it's disrespectful! Artists and creators are human, not Gods. They'll be happier to have real conversations than be pedestaled
(Hero worship is SO selfish and cruel... this train is headed somewhere else though)
The important things about taste and creativity are the process and the work. Respect the process. Give sincere good-faith feedback
Worship strips creators of what they need to keep making more good art - an honest context to operate in. It's actually so cruel... 🤔😓
On the other hand, we collectively tend to shit on beginners for trying&failing. This creates this artificial chasm that's bad for everyone
I love seeing scrappy, shitty work. It's a sign that somebody wants to make something, more than they're worried about what people think. ❤
Imagine a world where we encouraged beginners to keep making things. We'd have more good art AND better art than we can currently imagine
Another thing I hate is when critics try to size up a piece of work, cruelly, to see whether it deserves entry into the Hall Of Great Art
Might be more nuanced on this if challenged - but I think of every piece of art as a bit in a much larger conversation spanning centuries
If something sucks, just don't talk about it. No comment. It didn't interest me. Focus on what is compelling. Steer the conversation!
Critics & small-minded fans pit artists against each other. But we're really Team Humanity against absurdity of life &inevitability of death
If you don't like Twilight or 50shades or Lang Leav or Rupi Kaur - great! Make something better. Challenge and inspire us! We're all hungry
