So Republicans are planning to explode the deficit in order to cut taxes on the wealthy. Nobody should be surprised -- but many are, Why? 1/
Part of the answer, I'd argue, is the delusional but never-ending search for the Serious, Honest Republican. 2/
Paul Ryan the most conspicuous example: essentially canonized by mainstream media, literally given awards for fiscal probity 3/
When it was obvious from the beginning that he was a phony, who only cared n about enriching the rich 4/ nytimes.com/2010/08/06/opi…
Yet even now you read stories about Republicans in Congress who are supposedly deeply concerned about deficits. It's all fake 5/
But it's not just the media. It's still amazing how many of my economist colleagues endorsed Kevin Hassett 6/ medium.com/@hassett.econo…
They knew he wrote Dow 36,000 and never admitted error, ridiculed the housing bubble and never admitted error, etc. 7/
Yet somehow convinced themselves that he would be honest and honorable in office -- and were shocked when he offered phony analysis 8/
While slandering the people at Tax Policy Center who try to do their job for real. So why do people keep falling for these scammers? 9/
The main answer, I think, is that the reality is very uncomfortable. There are no serious, honest Republicans in America 2017 10/
There are serious, honest people who used to be Republicans. But they get excommunicated -- e.g. @BruceBartlett or @davidfrum . 11/
And there are Republicans who used to be serious and honest, but got corrupted. But there is no way to stay both GOP and honest. 12/
For the party is now essentially a big scam, that pretends to stand for God and (white) country while serving big money 13/
That's a very unpleasant thing to recognize, and few want to accept it. But unless you do, you'll just keep getting fooled 14/
