/ Oct. 3, 2006: A Chicago cop calls 911. So does the teen the cop's gun is pointed at. Here are their calls. Story: propub.li/2zwaL4J
/ At 11:51 p.m. is the first call:
/ Levigne had pulled over then 16yo Brandon Whitehead and his father, Walter. At 11:52 p.m., Brandon calls 911:
/ Brandon hangs up. About two minutes later, Officer Levigne calls 911 again.
/ Officer Levigne hangs up. Four minutes later, he calls a third time.
/ Brandon’s father, Walter Whitehead, was arrested by Chicago police that night. A judge dismissed the case a month later.
/ (By the way, Walter had received a citizen appreciation letter for helping police catch a bank robbery suspect in 2003).
/ Brandon was left on the street corner of 71st and Western. His mother arrived to pick him up at around 1 a.m. She was in tears.
/ After the incident, Walter sold his new Chrysler 300 fearing that it drew unwanted attention from police. He bought a truck.
/ Walter Whitehead filed a complaint against Levigne. Police oversight officials recommended a 60-day suspension.
/ Levigne challenged the suspension, and it was reduced from 60 days to 5. And then — for a while — nothing happened.
/ Why? Police officials lost track of the case. It was misclassified, so nobody enforced the suspension.
/ In fact, Levigne didn’t serve his suspension until *this* November—11 years later ...
/ … prompted by inquiries from reporters @Jodiscohen and @jsmithrichards for information about the case.
/ .@jodiscohen called Brandon, now 27, to let him know about Levigne’s recent suspension. Here’s what he said:
/ The Whitehead case is not the only one that’s been lost. We and @chicagotribune found more. Full story: propub.li/2zwaL4J
/ And we want to hear from you if you or someone you know has filed a complaint against a Chicago police officer: propub.li/2jf7S4d
/ We’ll be talking more about the Whiteheads in our newsletter this week. Read it Friday morning. Subscribe: propub.li/2ybHyN7
