Though I think it misrepresents my comments in the introduction, an interesting exercise in what some in Silicon Valley think you “can’t say”: medium.com/@jasoncrawford…
The one that made me LOL was “you can’t be anti-vax!” I mean, the problem is that *can* be. But of course you deserve derision if you’re a shitbag who wants to endanger kids.
Overall every single one of these ideas is boringly common & so obviously allowed to be said that millions of people do so. Literally no one can claim they lost their job or got a death threat for saying “capitalism is good”. That’s 100% babies whining about being criticized.
Actual things you “can’t say” are sincere incitements to violence, and the only speech that gets people persecuted by violent mobs of people is advocating for the rights of the marginalized.
But if we want to grant that Altman’s ostensible argument is true, then innovation is being stifled because startup people can’t say they like capitalism. Anybody think that’s right? Or suspect it’s really 100% they don’t like getting called out for bigotry?
Overall, this list genuinely made me laugh, and not in a dismissive way. I wanted it to be stuff like “I’ve been secretly stifling my desire to express that all puppies should be killed.” Like, go for it. Say something.
By the way, actual attacks on free speech look like Trump’s administration trying to convict nonviolent protestors as felons & imprison them for decades. Can you find one of the “free speech whiners” who’s done or said a single thing about it? huffingtonpost.com/entry/inaugura…
