I've been sitting here working & listening to some old-school Ghanaian hymns and something hit me hard. Yesterday I was annoyed at how journos have for so long been pretending this obvious racist is not a racist despite all the racist shit he continues to do. 1/8
But today as I'm listening to these tunes I learned from my parents, it struck me. Our so-called-president is talking about me. He's talking about my family, my culture, my homeland. He's talking about my mom... 2/8
I'm not gonna try to convey the depths of what I truly feel about this. But I will say I am so proud to be an African, a Ghanaian, a product of generations of brilliance, faith, hard work & good looks. It's not by accident that I'm here nor that I continue to strive. 3/8
I want to send a big shout-out to all the other immigrants who are breaking their backs on a daily basis to make this nation the best it can be. And to all the other Americans who have welcomed us w open arms, as we continue the immigrant legacy your own forebears shared in. 4/8
I want to give a shout out to the indigenous peoples across the Americas who have survived the relentless onslaught of colonization and find ways to live in peace with all of us who arrived later & continue to benefit from the lands their ancestors protected w heart & soul. 5/8
And I want to make a suggestion. POTUS can go to hell, his ticket was bought long ago. But for the rest of us, this is an amazing moment. America can never be great "again", because it has never truly fulfilled it's potential. We're amazing...but we could be sooo much better. 6/8
The madness in the WH has revealed America's flaws. So how about the rest of us commit to building bridges, reconnecting with our homelands, linking with those of others, learning more about what makes this country truly special by building deeper bonds with each other. 7/8
There's a generation of Americans who still don't have a clue what the USA is about. But those of us who CHOSE to make this place our home...we know. Better than most. The future of America is still bright, BECAUSE it's in OUR hands. No matter where we were born. #MyCountry /FIN
