A key premise that frames my remarks is that the US government is at war with its the Black citizens.
What most of you have learned in school as the transatlantic slave trade, Jim Crow, mass incarceration are phases of that war. The aim of the war is white supremacy. The police--local & fed (FBI, CIA, ICE or Immigration and Customs Enforcement) are instruments of white power.
For many of us, like me, who grew up in the ghettoes of America, the local police protect and serve white power and kill black and brown ppl. Indeed, Black "street gangs" like the Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles (my hood was Bloods) were a response to white violence.
ICE treats immigrants like hardened criminals. ICE rips apart families all across the US ON NATIONAL TV. We should be outraged. Do we not remember slave patrols and auction blocks that tore up black families?
Horrific. Obviously nothing like plantation slavery. But when we recall that most (not all) are the descendants of the genocide against Native Americans, the comparison with slavery is stronger--its part of long genocide, Indian removal 2018.
Black and Brown people, then, are the victims of a long genocide rooted in unthinkable violence and white terror.
