Couple of things. Firstly, thanks to everyone who honestly provided their feedback throughout the late afternoon and evening; it's much appreciated, and it gets heard and read, even though not all of it gets responded to
Secondly: this update is only a small one, but it's designed to narrow the article back a little more to what the original intent was and away from the broader brush that everyone accidentally got tarred with, which I didn't intend. Sorry about that, truly.
(there's more, but I'm not going at full speed right now, so apologies if I don't get all this in before your replies land)
3/ the story as to how AO tennis in particular got to this stage should be told some day, and I'd love to write that. but it deserves to be told well away from criticism of the game, as one story would detract from the other, and in future... (like steak knives, there's more)
4/ there's a better way to deliver criticism. i'm not backing away from the critique of the game, but how you say something matters as much as what's said, and i think that's something everyone can agree on without reservation. so that's a great lesson, and thank you all
5/ you never stop learning! ever. and something anyone has worked with me can confirm i've said - what matters most is how you respond to mistakes and fuckups, and most critically, how quickly you fix it.

and i could have responded a bit quicker, that's for sure.
6/ typically: if you're spending a good chunk of time trying to explain what you meant, then you buggered up the first time around.

and given that i wasn't trying to have a go at all developers, i definitely didn't need to phrase things that way to begin with, did i?
7/ so, a lesson in writing, conduct, and a good reminder about decency.

it's on the post, but sorry to those who work medically unsafe hours to get things done. you didn't deserve to be lumped in with bad phrasing and poorly aimed intent.
8/ there's always a better way. and don't stop trying to find what that better way is.

but know that, like me, you will cock up along the way. and when you do, make sure you respond quickly, if not for your yourself then at least for the dignity of others
9/ and because i don't want to gloss over it, to the hard working devs at big ant.

there's a lot of you who aren't having a great time right now - i honestly hope it gets better. your situation can't be great right now, and i'm sorry for unreasonably making that worse.
10/ criticism of a game is fair go; afl punting that into the same league as not respecting your player base is, a completely different (and very, very wrong) territory.
11/ i don't want to make assumptions on the particulars around contracts or working conditions, and so i'll avoid passing any comment on what the go is there. that's not appropriate or helpful, but i hope you all get some much needed sleep, and soon, a good break.
12/ anyway, i don't do lengthy threads often, so thanks to everyone who helped me get to this point.

again: i can say Not Nice Things about AO tennis, but those can and should have been said in a way that didn't disparage undoubtedly good, decent, hardworking people.
13/ tomorrow's a new day.

i'll try and make it a better one than today.

i hope it's a better one for you as well.
