Moscow's ears in Germany

Germany is an important spy target for Moscow. Russia also uses the country as a base for satellite espionage - the platform for this are diplomatic missions and a cultural centre. There are a few interesting details 1/12
Russian #SIGINT activities in Germany have increased significantly in the last decade. In the middle of Berlin, on the edge of the government district, surrounded by government administration buildings, lies the Russian Embassy 2/12
On the roof of the property you can see the classic HF "Cage dipole" as well as other receiving antennasā€¦ 3/12

2/ There are exterior displays right next to the museum's main building and also a bunch at a field a couple of blocks away. Here are Bell-UH-1H Huey, A-7E Corsair II, F-4N Phantom II, A-4F Blue-Angel, T-33 and an F-86D/F-86L Sabre.
3/ The first remote lot is two blocks from the museum and behind a chain-link fence. Still, it's impressive and includes a A-12, F-84F, F-101, F-102A, F-104, F-105, F-111A, CH-54B, T-28, MiG-21U, T-2C, etc.

1/ As suggested by @PopovaProf, I'd like to comment on the recent remarks by the #Brazilian president-elect, @LulaOficial, on the #Russian war of aggression in #Ukraine. Needless to say, many were struck by the ignorance and brutishness of these utterances. A šŸ§µ...
2/ But what lies behind this? Many European/US observers seem dumbfounded by the fact that a leader who is widely (and correctly) believed to have bravely stood against dictatorship in his own country would support a genocidal warmonger such as #Putin on the international stage.
3/ The sources of Lula's (and #LatinAmerica's more widely) attitudes towards the war are many, and differ widely between countries, contexts, and social strata. The probably most often mentioned one is anti-Americanism, stemming from a variety of sources, but often relevant...

1/ #TankTuesday #tanks #USA's #ColdWar M103A2 w/ L/60 120 mm main gun. This supersized tank used the M48/M60 power plant but 7 road wheels, 120mm gun, very thick armor, etc. This was overkill for Soviet tanks, underpowered, susceptible to breakdown.
2/ #Military Is the M103 the biggest gun and biggest tank #USArmy ever put into production? In fact, M1A2's 63 to 73 short tons bracket the M103's 65 short tons, but the M1A2's L/44 120 mm is shorter than the M103's L/60!
3/ #USA #military #history ā€“ The M103ā€™s 120mm x L/60 = 7200mm=7.2 meters or 23.6ā€™! In comparison, the King Tigerā€™s 88 was merely 20.5ā€™ and the Jagdtigerā€™s 128mm=23.1ā€™. Did anyone make a longer tank / tank destroyer gun?

The announcement by #Russian Defence Ministry on Tuesday on Vostok-22 strategic command post exercises during August 30-September 5 gives a big message to the West in political and military terms.

The announcement said, ā€œIn addition to the troops (forces) of the Eastern Military District, units of the Airborne Troops, Long Range Aviation and Military Transport Aviation, as well as military contingents from other states, will be involved in these manoeuvres.ā€

If there is going to be participation by #China, it will be highly significant in the present context of global politics, especially in the Far East.

šŸ§µA lesson from the last #ColdWar. In the 80s, one of the results of China's opening up to the outside world was that many underground movie studios popped up in neighborhoods, showing pirated western movies.
When my friends and I saw images of happy and well-nourished people and fully-stocked grocery stores through these movies, we began to question whether capitalism was really as evil as we were taught .
To our young and simple mind, if Marxist revolution means constant starvation and material shortages and capitalism leads to a full belly and material abundance, we would rather have capitalism.

An amazing analysis of the current #Ukraineļø #war
@kamilkazani takes us back to Cold War and evolution of Russian war machine based on those weapons/tactics.
Question: Will this op prove to be as much a watershed for #Russianarmy as it was for #UkrainianArmedForces in 2014?
In addition, the entire situation raises further questions
1-As mentioned in the tweet above, would this stimulate transformation of military affairs in the #RussianArmy in particular and #RussianArmedForces forces in general?
Especially considering the points @kamilkazani made?
2-Actually, and retrospectively, this raises more questions. And these questions are based on President #Putin own past career in particular and the post #SovietUnion combat experience of the #RussianArmedForces in general

There are 3 main scenarios how this conflict could evolve going forward. Each of those scenario has certain probabilities of it occurring. Lets examine each one of them and their implications to the world in general:
Scenario 1 - (P:60%) #Ukarine & #Russia agree a ceasefire. Ukraine agrees to cede #Crimea and #Donbass to #Russia. #Putin withdraws #RussianArmy. #Europe over a period of time removes #sanctions. In a year, World becomes normal & everyone lives happily. Best outcome possible.
Scenario 2 - (P:30%) The conflict escalates. stalemate ensues. #Putin reaches #Dniper, takes over Kyiv. #Ukraine is bi-furcated in two - #EastUkraine under #Russian control, #WestUkraine aligned with #NATO. #SanctionsRussiaNow continue for long. #Europe consolidates with #USA

Yesterday, a Telegram channel associated with the #WagnerGroup posted a call for recruits:

"The Wagner Philharmonic has decided to take part in the Great World Concert and is holding auditions to select for its touring musical troupe."

A šŸ§µ on #Wagner & what the post reveals.
1. Some background: Russian #VDV Airborne #Spetsnaz commander Dmitry Utkin adopted the callsign "Wagner" in the first Russian incursion in #Donbas in 2014, a triple entendre indicating his position as "conductor" of off-book scouts and saboteurs now known as the #WagnerGroup.
2. Much has been made of Wagner's affiliation with neo-Nazi movements in #Russia. But the cultural weave of Russian mercenaries is more nuanced.

"Wagner" also refers to the German composer's valorization during the #ThirdReich by Adolf Hitler & Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

"This is not the outcome we sought to prevent," said #US State Department spokesman on the current #Ukraine war. Just a slip of the tongue?
Former Representative Tulsi Gabbard might have told the truth: "President Biden could end this crisis and prevent a war with #Russia by doing something very simple, guaranteeing that #Ukraine will not become a member of #NATO, Ā·Ā·Ā·
because if #Ukraine became a member of NATO, that would put US and NATO troops directly on the doorstep of Russia, which as Putin has laid out, would undermine their national security interest. Why doesn't President Biden and NATO leaders actually just say that and guarantee it?

What is this #war about, how to make it infeasible for #Russia, and what consequences could it have? Here's what I see.
First let's talk about why the #UkraineInvasion happened. Obviously, none of the things said by #Russia are the true reason.

After all art has been stolen, assets removed, people displaced or killed, and infrastructure destroyed, what is left? Land, buildings, natural resources.
The long term spoils of #Russia's invasion on #Ukraine are the dismantling of the old ruling class and installing of a new one which has sponsored this war. Make no mistake, Putin is representing not his own interests, but the interests of a group of people behind him.

2. In 1972, China needed to avert a terrestrial invasion from #USSR. The #UnitedStates was keen to gain a heavy-weight partner to checkmate #Moscow; but the long-term objective was to bring the most populous country into a rising US-led global economic order for the US to profit
3. In the following decades, the relationship was not void of tensions. However, strategic interests were important enough to save it from #TaiwanRelationsAct, #Reagan anti #communism and support for #Taiwan; #TiananmenSquare; #StraitCrisis 1995-1996; #Belgrade bombing

1. Some rambling thoughts that occur to me as I ponder the #UkraineCrisis: A Geopolitical Tweet Thread of Uncertain Proportions.

I really fail to understand the number of people I see actually defending #Russia re: #Ukraine.
2. #Russia has security concerns. I agree. History and geography necessitates they are going to be wary of being attacked, particularly across the North European Plain.
3. But if you want to keep your neighbors out of a rival alliance, invading, seizing territories, ignoring security guarantees previously given, interfering with their internal affairs, and massing hundreds of thousands of troops on their borders doesn't seem like the best method
