In honor of @jasonlk announcing @saastreuropa in Paris this June (and with @SaaStrAnnual coming up next week), I thought I’d take a second to tweet-thread about how Paris has grown to be a global hub for SaaS leaders.

I have to tweet in Jason-haikus.
1) @alvencap has done an amazing job at partnering with tier 1 SVfunds ( @IndexVentures, @Accel, @a16z, @sequoia) to make sure their SaaS investments go global.

They also work with @NotionVC & @PointNineCap in Europe.

That’s a powerful VC capital.
has perfected the SaaS model, building products to solve problem for their one dozen existing studio companies, and making a name for themselves in the process.

They’ve sent ~6 companies through @ycombinator.

🇫🇷 is one of the most popular origins for YC alums.
France has a strong history in B2B Software (looking at you @Bliautaud, founder of @BusinessObjects),

and the SaaS model plays strongly into the engineering-minded CEOs that France is crushing it with right now.
Here’s a few examples:
- Algolia (SaaS API): $75M raises from @Accel @alvencap @PointNineCap
- Front ( SaaS Communication Platform): $79M raises from @sequoia @IndexVentures @PointNineCap)
- @dataiku (Data Science SaaS): $45 M raised
- @PeopleDoc_Inc (SaaS HR): $75 M raised.
The next big revolution in SaaS is AI/NLP/ML ( Drift, Madkudu, etc.).

Guess where Facebook & Google are doubling down in AI research right now?

Yup. France.
The big thing that’s been holding France back is regulation/labor/taxes.

All the companies currently crushing it are doing so despite the system.

And our current president just held a Davis pre-party for CEOs to bid to invest in France.

France is back, baby!

The state of French-language tech news is, honestly, deplorable. I feel sorry for those who don’t have the luxury of being bilingual.

French people shouldn’t have to turn to English-language news just to get an actual overview of what’s going on.

Where’s the journalism?
In @cgiorgi’s Facebook group, the most common complaint is that there’s not enough “off the record” talk.

But plenty of people will go on the record to credible journalists who earn the respect of their audience.

We need more brand-name tech journalists.
Don’t get me wrong, @romaindillet & @obrien do a great job, but their audience numbers (in France) Paul in comparison to all the “here’s what you missed this week” FrenchTech blogs.

(Thread) The discussion around US school shootings reminds me a lot of France's 2015-2017 fight against terrorism from ISIS. I thought a lot about this last month on the Charlie Hebdo 3-year anniversary, so let's jump in.
In January 2015, terrorists used Slovakia-bought assault rifles to raid the the secret, unmarked Charlie Hebdo offices, killing 17 people, included a trained bodyguard armed with a loaded pistol.

A well-trained & armed defender was killed. Remember that.
In November 2015, 130 were killed, including notably an attack on the Batalcan venue. Targets were also restaurant & bar terraces as well as the PSG soccer venue Stade de France, which thwarted a suicide bomber with a security guard.

I was of two minds as to whether this awful piece of writing in the @WSJ about British Muslims should be given any attention. On balance, given the misleading propaganda therein, deliberately designed to play on anti-Muslim bigotry, in a dangerous climate, here goes: #Thread
From the outset: I take extremism seriously. I was deputy convenor of the UK's government task-force on the issue, published a book with Brookings on it, and was seconded to the Foreign Office's counter-terrorism analyst team. This piece was not even on the level of amateur hour.
More broadly on Muslim Britons, Muslim Europeans and multiculturalism - I've been writing about that for a decade, and wrote a book on it with Edinburgh University Press. I'm not trying to brag here. There are far better academics than I. But this piece ignores all real work.
