Web replaced middlemen with centralised companies. Blockchains will replace these centralised companies with decentralised systems which will enable peer to peer transactions.
Transaction is "an exchange or interaction between people". In today's world we can extend "people" to say people/machines.
Computers enabled measuring THESE actions/transactions. Blockchains enabled storing THESE on ledgers public/private. Cryptocurrencies will enable to monetise each and every of THESE.
There will be individual blockchains/cryptocurrencies enabling these in their niche areas/audiences in every sectors. Today these cryptocurrencies can be exchanged from one to another through an intermediate step of converting them to Bitcoin using a centralised exchange.
With cryptos like Kyber Network, 0x and Bitshares we can get rid of centralised exchanges over the time. With atomic swaps we may not need even these.
Once we have decentralised exchanges and atomic swaps that valuations of each of the cryptos will depend only on the value they add in their niche and not on things like getting listed on exchanges and being able to buy stuff with these tokens.
Bitcoin might remain as the store of value and there will only be a handful of projects which will function payment solutions. Every other project will be judged only based on the value addition it provides or the potential for value addition which is how it should be.
With adoption the volumes will increase, with volumes the speculations will come down and the prices will be much more stable which will bring in more institutional money.
Money begets money. Power begets power. Money begets power. Power begets money. Anybody who has either of these two would like it to remain so : STATUS QUO.
Blockchains and cryptos are setting money free now. Power will be next. "Power" knows it and that is reasons powerhouses of "Power" trying to strangle cryptos. We need to wait and see how blockchains will set "Power" free.
Once the technological challenges are addressed we will see true democracy taking shape. A democracy for the whole humanity surpassing all borders physical or mental.
After a long time we have a chance for building a system for the whole humanity that is driven by Democracy and Capitalism while addressing the "Tragedy of Commons" at the same time.
Let us hope we don't screw this up for we will have no one else to blame :)
