Folks, something needs to be understood about gun reform: private sales of firearms ARE NOT the same as licensed firearms dealers. They have different regulations, and that is an enormous problem.

Until folks get this, more people will die. (thread)
2/ The "gun show loophole" phrasing is misleading. It implies there's some sort of structure to private sales in most states. That it has to be at a gun show.

A private sale can literally be you purchasing from someone you met online or at a coffee shop or on the street, etc.
3/ Does everyone understand that? I can meet a stranger on the street, know nothing about them, and sell them the firearm I'm carrying. No questions asked. No background check. No ID. No registration required.

THAT is legal in 31 states for ALL firearms. Think about that.
4/ Yes, it's a good thing Gov. Rick Scott wants to raise the minimum age from 18 to 21 to purchase firearms from licensed dealers, but the questions everyone needs to be asking are 1) does that apply to private sales and 2) why are there no background checks for private sales?
5/ Governor Scott put out this list of measures he wants to implement but nothing about them specifically applying to private sales. Therefore, it doesn't really do anything. If you don't require a background check, how do you hold people accountable?
6/ Even if Scott's proposals are implemented tomorrow, there's nothing saying an 18 year-old--hell, a 12 year-old--couldn't purchase a gun from a private seller. There's nothing requiring the seller to ensure that kid is of legal age. No background check or registration. Get it?
7/ Until private sales are held completely accountable, our children are not safe. None of us are safe. We need to demand accountability from these politicians. No half-measures. /thread
