2. We’ve always had gun-free zones and we’ve never had guns in schools. For reason. What’s changed? Technology. Larger population. The Internet makes it easier to get deadly weapons and high-capacity magazines. Mental Health of the population? — probably all these things.
3. We. Cannot. Control. For. Crazy. Let’s start there, because it’s a biggie. We’re failing at even closing the gaps on crazy that we know about. We’ve got people in the WH administration that can’t get security clearance. The White House...think about it.
4. I want you to keep that it mind because it’s going to come in to play — let me repeat — we can’t control for crazy. Even if we close the ‘loopholes’ - which we haven’t. Even if we raise the age for buying weapons - tragedy will still happen at the same rate.
5. So, what if we do arm teachers? First of all, we’re putting deadly weapons in close proximity with children. I don’t even want to have a workplace where people are armed, let alone one where children are involved.
6. Those that argue that the guns will be safely stored — forget about it. Do you have any idea how many accidental deaths involving children occurs within households each year? Houses with maybe 1-3 kids - we’re talking about hundreds. Don’t underestimate them.
7. And the adults? What did I say? We can’t control for crazy. I’ve got news for you. Just because someone becomes a teacher doesn’t mean they can’t lose their shit. Depression, rage, lovers’ quarrels, mental illness - we’re talking about hundreds of thousands of individuals.
8. You think tragedy won’t happen? It will. And it will be on us. This can’t be a federal decision or even a state decision. If private schools want to make this choice, then I suppose it’s on them, but it CANNOT be government sanctioned.
9. Many of us choose not to raise our children in a home with guns. Sending them to a public school with guns on the premises is not acceptable. I don’t, for a second, believe any risk management assessment would even say it minimized the chance of injury.
10. The fact that such an absurd idea is being promoted by our “President” is mind boggling in and of itself — it only serves as a testament to the limitation of this man’s intelligence.
11. As a governing body, we fix what we can to ensure the best outcome for our citizens. We are not arguing against a citizen’s ability to arm themselves, but we are arguing against the grade of weaponry and ammunition.
12. You wouldn’t be ok with citizens arming themselves with nukes, hydrogen bombs, biochemical weapons. Even the most basic mind understands that the 2nd Amendment was referring to muskets, not AR-15’s with high capacity magazines. The technology won’t stop, but the law must.
