So. I’m currently being piled on because I dared criticize L*z Bruen#g. Whatever. BUT. One thing that just happened is some dude called me a “white lady” and Liz thought it was hilarious. So! Let’s gather around and have a chat! 1/
When I mentioned I was not white, some dude found some old tweets where I said I was white. Liz, the white woman, also found this hilarious.
My mother is mostly Lebanese and a little Syrian. My father is pretty much white European. If you didn’t know, MENA people, for census purposes are considered “white.” SO, Lebanese people and Arabs in general while technically white, aren’t always afforded those privileges.
My Lebanese grandfather wasn’t allowed to purchase property in certain cities because he was Lebanese. My mother’s family was one of the only “Brown” families where she grew up. She was called names like sand n-word.
BUT, my mother has never felt comfortable calling herself a POC because she also grew up with white-passing privilege - even while never fully reaping the “benefits” of that privilege.
So, let’s get back to me - the person who also is white passing but has also been called too “brown” and asked “where I’m from.” I felt similar to my mother. I was never fully comfortable calling myself “not white.” So yes, I called myself white on twitter.
It wasn’t to “win arguments on twitter.” (Fucking lol) it was because racial and ethic identity is complicated and I’m white passing and felt like my mother. But now a bunch a white socialists have decided they’re going to explain it to me on twitter and I’m fucking tired of it.
One day, @AngryBlackLady told someone I wasn’t white. And I honestly felt weird about it. I talked to my mom and my friends and I realized that this shit is complicated and weird and yeah; I’m not white but I am white passing. I have that privilege and have never denied that.
If you notice those screenshot tweets, I’m calling myself white to call out my privilege. I refrain from weaponizing my ethnic background. I won’t, however, stand by and let a bunch of white socialists think they’ve somehow “outed” me when I’ve talked about this before.
So now everyone going to explain this to me which is super fun.
All of this to defend L:z Brue~ig - who is *actually* white.
For the record, I’ve always been open about being Lebanese. For some people, though, I’m not white enough and for some people I’m not brown enough. Here’s the thing - i know what I’ve experienced. I know the privilege I have - that’s something I learned from my Lebanese family.
Anyway, the dude who did the twitter search about me being “white” is the one on the right 🙃
Here’s another dude explaining this to me:
It’s kind of hilarious that mostly white people are lecturing a Lebanese woman for calling out her own white privilege.
Morning update: the white dude who did the search for “white” in my tweets has blocked me.
