I turned 30 today!

For the last 5 years, I've tracked major life lessons that are easy for me to forget in a notes doc. I shared these today @orbitalnyc Show & Tell, and thought I'd share them here too:
1) Don't attend events where there are mostly people you don't want to know.
2) Never take credit for the work of others (especially groups) if you can share. Also don't let other people take credit for your work.
3) Self-promotion mostly attracts self-promoters.
4) Being good at something doesn't make it the right thing to be doing.
5) Unlike a JRPG, no one is going to hand you a purpose, so you have to figure that shit out yourself :(
6) Approach everything with as much intention as possible. Especially things that look easy.
7) "When action grows unprofitable, gather information;
When information grows unprofitable, sleep." - Ursula K. Le Guin
8) This perennial gem from my cat's godfather 👇🏼
9) "This is a problem so fucked up, only I can solve it" is a really bad reason to do anything. (This is basically a rehash of 4, because learning this is hard.)
10) Projects I'm most in awe of have impeccable presentation in the front, diplomatic coordination in the back, and redistribution of power in the middle.

(This one is inspired by watching my bb unnie @msjchun, who I am always in awe of.)
11) "Hard work" is not as important as persistence, discipline, and work done with care.
12) "The Freedom to do *exactly* what you want is better than the freedom to do *whatever* you want." - @immir
13) "To do good, work well, and lie low is the way of the blessing." - Ursula K. LeGuin again.
These are just the things I'm currently digesting—there's a lot I haven't figured out how to put into words yet, or that I've actually internalized successfully.

Most of this I learned from people around me—including Y'ALL, because I've been on Twitter for 1/3 of my life 😱
Teaching has taught me that these pithy sayings only make sense AFTER you've really been through something; they're my mementos, not the lesson itself.
