For our class this year, @garychou and I asked our students to immerse themselves in a community and then try to create and share a small offering—a community-centered approach to design rather than solutionism. Here's what they learned:
"Because I followed the list [of questions] so closely, afraid of silent gaps in conversation, we weren’t able to enjoy the fun parts of interview." - @XiaoxiYuan_Lulu realized that interviews go better when they feel like casual conversations.

"To my surprise, once I started interviewing stakeholders in the space they had a lot more insight and information than anything I can find online." @jasonlamarb had to go beyond desk research to really get a sense of the homelessness ecosystem.

"I have learned throughout my journey that parents hold the keys to the ignition that is their children’s foray into the world." @madease realized that his project about reducing screentime for kids is actually targeted at parents.

"Attempting something small but with success is more rewarding than attempting something big but only half baked." @SircarAbhinav learned about scoping (🙌🏼) and the value of small steps.

"I practiced being a true explorer, which means to be open, curious, non-judgemental, patient and observant. I only started to synthesize all the findings towards the end of the fourth week." @angie_ngoctran resisted her impulse to start designing.

"My ego works really hard to protect me from failure, which often only leaves me stagnant, doing nothing." @katestyer grappled with our advice to separate one's ego from work.

"Putting every Peruvian in a room just because they were born in the same city does not mean they will all magically get along." @macalita89 learned that the opposite of disconnection is not necessarily a Facebook group 😆

These are hard-earned lessons, easy to repeat but hard to internalize, plucked from far beyond the comfort zone. We are teaching an abstract, squishy, uncomfortable thing about the nature of networks + what it means to navigate uncertainty; we're grateful they're game.
