For our class this year, @garychou and I asked our students to immerse themselves in a community and then try to create and share a small offering—a community-centered approach to design rather than solutionism. Here's what they learned:
"Because I followed the list [of questions] so closely, afraid of silent gaps in conversation, we weren’t able to enjoy the fun parts of interview." - @XiaoxiYuan_Lulu realized that interviews go better when they feel like casual conversations.

These are hard-earned lessons, easy to repeat but hard to internalize, plucked from far beyond the comfort zone. We are teaching an abstract, squishy, uncomfortable thing about the nature of networks + what it means to navigate uncertainty; we're grateful they're game.

I turned 30 today!

For the last 5 years, I've tracked major life lessons that are easy for me to forget in a notes doc. I shared these today @orbitalnyc Show & Tell, and thought I'd share them here too:
1) Don't attend events where there are mostly people you don't want to know.
2) Never take credit for the work of others (especially groups) if you can share. Also don't let other people take credit for your work.

Design hiring managers: Should you consider doing design challenges as part of your interview process it’s important to know how to properly execute them. Here are some tips to conducting effective design challenges:
1) Design challenges should not be be take-home work (paid or not!). A design challenge should occur during the on-site interview with the candidates in person (remote design challenges are not effective).
2) Design challenges should NEVER involve your company’s product, a problem the design team is currently dealing with, or anything even remotely in the realm the company does business. A design challenge should ALWAYS be on a generic/universal design problem.

Heard (again) that #design and #ux is somehow incompatible with #agile (which to most, means #scrum).

..that ppl can’t always jam their work into little increments

..that MVPs suck because they’re never improved

..that work can’t always be boiled down into a “ticket” 1/n
...that #design is more than screens...a more holistic view is needed

...that an output fixation is killing products

...that quality shouldn’t be sacrificed just to get stuff out the door

...that craft should be respected

...that #ux debt sucks 2/n
...and you know what? Those exact same things are muttered by engineers/QA all the time.

They have nothing to do with #agile, but everything to do with paint-by-numbers approaches to “delivery”, org silos, and overly simplistic “#design then build” models. 3/n

When he wasn't tightening the border to try to get immigration reform passed, Obama used it as an alibi, i.e. not as wall but as an excuse to deport those whose unauthorized crossing would not be tolerated.
#toleratedillegality in border crossings is just one of many cases where the balance of forces & the state conspire to have the law serve mostly symbolic purposes. While Obama did the right thing to try to create a path to citizenship for MILLIONS,
even his approach externalized the costs of our own drug war by deporting those caught up in it & refused the costs of the way we fought the Cold War that destabilized societies people try to escape.
