(2) First off, there are not a lot of rules about declaring national emergencies. And sadly, even in America, this executive power is rarely checked by Congress.

It's a tactic that has been used by both authoritarians and democracies around the world.

(3) While Trump can declare a national emergency at his discretion, he can't invoke one indefinitely without Congressional approval. And there are some limits to how this authority can be used to deploy troops & use funding.

I was out for a walk this afternoon in my neighborhood, tromping through half ploughed icy sidewalks when something happened that happens way way too often.

A red pickup truck with a big engine pulled up alongside of me.

(2) At first I didn’t think much of it, but I did look up and glare at the driver. As a woman walking alone, even in the middle of the day, I am hyper aware of my surroundings.

I feel uncomfortable wearing headphones to listen to music when in public for exactly this reason.
(3) The driver was a young to middle aged white male and his truck was loud. He coasted along beside me for nearly half a block before stopping.

I was annoyed but shrugged it off. Maybe he wasn’t sure where he was going and was trying to get a closer look at the house numbers.

Martin Luther King, Jr. spent every day of his life knowing that a bullet may come from out of nowhere and his life would end.
So every word mattered.
And every word did.
That kind of bravery is beyond uncommon...
and it's that kind of bravery that moves US as a people forward.
We need that kind of bravery now. We are up against an evil that is unparalleled in American History. We are so used to being dosed with the opiate of the masses that we've lost all sense of reality.
This man is going to destroy all of humanity if we don't stop him.
All of the good of humanity needs to join hands and stop this evil from destroying humanity.
It's crazy that it has come this far this fast but anyone watching knows it has. This is insane. Evil is now in control and we need to acknowledge it.
And we need to fight back.

OK, settle in. I have no idea where this is going but I have a few things to say.

Anyone who follows me knows that I work really hard to amplify the voices of our Democratic elected officials. I follow every Senate Dem, and retweet them frequently.
I'm always looking for that story that destroys a GOP narrative, or features a Democrat being especially smart and savvy. No one on Twitter is more invested on strengthening the only national political party that doesn't want to discriminate against marginalized people.
I pounce on people trying to both sides an issue or blur the lines by citing some weakness, error or mistake a Democrat may have made. Especially if the reason they're doing so is to raise $$$ for their grift by selling Dems Suck.

In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested and jailed in Birmingham, AL.

From his jail cell, he wrote one of the most important indictments of American racism and moral complacency, "Letter From a Birmingham Jail." okra.stanford.edu/transcription/…
LDF represented Dr. King throughout his years of leadership—during the 1963 Birmingham campaign, in Selma in 1965, and in many other places in the South.

In her book, LDF lawyer Constance Baker Motley recalled visiting Dr. King while he was detained in GA with Ralph Abernathy:
Dr. King had come to Birmingham as part of the SCLC campaign to end segregation in the city. Black people, organized, and trained in nonviolent confrontational tactics, executed marches and sit-ins. pbs.org/video/religion…

A student, Matthew Ward, bought a self-cocking pistol in the morning, went to school and killed Schoolmaster Mr. Butler in front of his classmates for excessively punishing his brother the day before.

After school, a teacher was walking with four small children. She was approached by a Mr. Hall and shot. The Schoolmaster ran out, but she was dead instantly. Hall threw himself in front of a train.

December 5th, 1955: A 26-year-old baptist minister helped to organize a boycott addressing racially segregated bus systems in Montgomery, Alabama as well as the unconstitutional arrest of Rosa Parks just four days before. This organizer was Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

When Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to leave her seat for a white man, Black community leaders began to organize. A group of Black women, known as the Women’s Political Council, began to circulate fliers calling for a boycott on the day Parks would be tried.
