It's April 22, 2018 and I'm about to have an angry threadblast about the ending of How I Met Your Mother which occurred in 2014 and I'm still mad about. Mute accordingly.
Let's start with the choice to villainize Robin Scherbatsky for her career. The whole series saw her rise from smalltime reporter to international news anchor. SHE ACHIEVED HER DREAMS and the finale is devoted to her getting divorced and disappointing her friends because of it.
Beyond that, after divorcing Barney, she is basically just ALONE until she's in her 50s, just her and her dogs, LIVING A GREAT LIFE but the show wants us to somehow think she's just been lonely and sadsack missing out on the "great love of her life" THAT SHE NEVER FUCKING WANTED.
BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T WANT TED. She never wanted Ted! She never wanted marriage or kids until Barney. The show dedicates the whole final season to the marriage between two characters who actually had a healthy relationship and they kill it in 20 minutes. And for what?
To service the Nice Guy narrative that plagued the whole series. The entire concept of the series is reduced to a DEAD WOMAN who stood merely as obstacle that needed to die to get the REAL love story to start. Ted gets two great loves--one dead and one who finally just GIVES IN.
Ted is REWARDED for his patience and understanding WITH A HUMAN WOMAN. One who is punished for her career and her choices by a series that had celebrated her for it in the preceding years.
AND BARNEY. Barney, who learned the lesson of "women are people and I need to be not an actual evil monster" repeatedly just to unlearn and relearn it in the finale, thanks to, yet again, THE REWARD OF A HUMAN WOMAN but this time it's a CHILD whose mother is reduced to slutjoke.
And that comes entirely from airing an episode in 2014 that was written in 2006-2007. Because for as problematic as the series remained--and I say this as someone who LOVED this show--it progressed because society did. It was this bizarre throwback to another time.
ANYWAY HAVE A NICE SUNDAY EVERYONE ESPECIALLY THE FICTIONAL ICON THAT IS ROBIN SCHERBATSKY WHO DESERVED BETTER.
YES I FEEL THIS STRONGLY ABOUT THIS #mybrand
[comes back like that scene in Girls Trip where Tiffany Haddish keeps pulling stuff out of her purse trying to leave] AND ANOTHER THING. REMEMBER THAT EPISODE WHERE ROBIN LITERALLY FLOATS AWAY LIKE A GODDAMN BALLOON? WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAT?
Like how many times did they make dude "let her go"?! JESUS CHRIST TED.
Anyway I actually think I'm done now not really but frankly who knows.
HEY THERE IT IS SUPER SHITTY TO TAG IN AND ALERT THE SHOW’S CREATORS THANKS.
