The reactions to my cultural appropriation of @realsexycyborg's @sino_bit at #GPN18 were different and sometimes quite amusing.
Some younger hackers asked who that young man with the red star on his hat was [1/n]

Others tried to read a political message into the characters shown on @realsexycyborg's @sino_bit without actually being able to read Chinese. [2/n]
Yet others at #GPN18 wanted to see the full text, so they could try and decipher it more easily than as scrolling bitmap text on @realsexycyborg's @sino_bit

Then, a visiting Chinese scientist (who doesn't want to be identified) showed up at #GPN18, saw the messages on @realsexycyborg's @sino_bit and found them really funny. He told me that this was "扛着红旗反红旗", which, as Westerner, I didn't quite understand. [4/n]
