Here is a summary🧵 of my experience in Khartoum #Sudan and beyond when the conflict erupted on 15 April!

- I Arrived Khartoum on 10th April, to take up a new role. I went to office on Tues, Wed and Thurs. Fri & Sat is weekend. Sunday is first day of the week and work. Image
- Friday 14, I scouted for an apartment and got one.

- Saturday April 15, I was headed to Dahabshil to pick money and pay landlord. Shooting erupted in front of my tuktuk (‘Raksha’). Driver Made the fastest U-turn have ever seen- back to hotel.
- From Sunday April 16, to one week later there was no hope but intense firing continued, cooks deserted the hotel and we had to go to the kitchen to cook, we ran out of supply but I had some water and a few sugary edibles. twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

This 🧵 is about one of my oldest friends, who I've admired for literal decades, and who is Sudanese.

I met her in Cairo, a million years ago when I was desperate to *not* live in Brooklyn and the Arab world felt like a revelation... Image
This girl and I met when we were at the same college, both Black women who wore silk scarves - but not over our hair 😉

We became friends and she kind of "adopted" me. Although she lived with her family in her 20s and I lived on my own and ran around with all kinds of people 🥴 Image
She told me how her family had been forced to leave Sudan when she was younger: they'd left a flour processing factory behind and lived in London before moving the family to Egypt.

Although she invited me, I demurred when she went to visit relatives in Khartoum in the summer.

The Security & Military Intelligence Service is contradicting Sudanese values & violating the laws of war by evicting internally displaced people who are not Sudanese from shelters & dormitories, according to eyewitnesses in Wad Medani in Al Jazira State. #KeepEyesOnSudan
Security & Military Intelligence officers in Wad Medani are denying essential services to internally displaced people who are not Sudanese. The services, paid for by the city's generous residents, include food, medicine & emergency relief supplies for children & the elderly.
Multiple eyewitness reports from Wad Medani corroborate this social media post describing the desperate situation faced by resident foreigners in Sudan who have fled war in Khartoum, and who are being evicted from emergency shelters & denied essential relief services. Image

🧵Please RT this #PublicHealth thread for internally displaced people & refugees in Sudan on how to disinfect drinking water.💦 You can kill pathogens in Sudanese surface water by boiling it for one minute.🔥 But another safe method uses the sun.☀️ #KeepEyesOnSudan #SudanUpdates
The @WHO recommends solar disinfection (SODIS) to disinfect drinking water when you cannot boil water. All you need is clear, plastic bottles, such as 1-liter or 2-liter bottles that previously held soda or juice. Place the bottles on a roof or in full sunlight for 6 hours.☀️ ImageImage
Six hours of exposure in full sunlight (or two days of exposure if the weather is cloudy) will pasteurize the water. The UV-A solar radiation combined with the heat from the sun for 6+ hours will destroy or deactivate most pathogens, making your water much safer to drink. ImageImage

As we continue to discuss stories of "heroic rescue" of foreign nationals, I think this is a perfect time to examine the Q? of *who* gets to be a 'foreign national' worthy of rescue.

We've already established citizens of Sudanese origin = not it.

#KeepEyesOnSudan
And it's not Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees and residents, because no one has even *mentioned* them since the beginning of this conflict.

Among the most vulnerable groups, traumatized and displaced by war twice-over. But it is as if they don't even exist.

#KeepEyesOnSudan
And it's not #Syrian refugees & residents, either.

In my friend's neighborhood is a Syrian bakery that has not closed since the beginning of this crisis.

One of the staff told him "None of us have stopped working. We've been through this before. We've been through worse."

- In a disturbing development, police in Gineina reportedly opened their armory & encouraged civilians to take up arms.

- Involving civilians threatens to take the conflict from 2 warring military factions to something more widespread.

#KeepEyesOnSudan
- Violence was not only confined to Gineina; in Khartoum, heavy shelling & airstrikes continued.

- Doctors in Omdurman report dire circumstances; reusing PPEs & surgical kits.

- Many facilities still out of commission as healthcare system buckles under the weight of conflict.

A #Sudan-ese mother who fled to Egypt gave an eyewitness testimony of the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) dominance in Bahri, including the occupation and looting of civilian homes such as her own.

We translated her comments to @AJArabic in the thread below 👇

🗣️ “I am one of the residents of Al-Sababi [a neighbourhood in Bahri]. The RSF robbed and looted our home and took our money, gold and cars. They fired bullets at our feet. My home was occupied. They have occupied Al-Sababi and they’re in every home”.
(2/17)

🗣️ We know [RSF troops’] language well. They don’t speak Arabic well. So don’t lie and say that they are being impersonated by people in RSF uniforms. We know them from their look and their accent”.

2. Set boundaries between your work & your personal life.🧱 Reinforce them with sand bags. Consider getting a guard dog.🐕‍🦺
3. Connect with people you care about. These may be people who own a generator or people with fuel to run a generator. Barter with food.🍞

Today's quick & dirty recap [April 23]

- A quiet day in Khartoum proper as foreign govts carried out evacuation of embassy officials.

- Elsewhere in the tri-city capital, clashes b/w RSF & SAF raged on. See @BeamReports interactive map: tinyurl.com/4atvhtv7

#KeepEyesonSudan
- RSF claimed to escort several foreign convoys to evacuation - notably US & France.

- The US has denied using the RSF as escort; no word from the French govt as of the writing of this recap.

#KeepEyesOnSudan
- Many in Khartoum fear once evacuation missions are complete, violence will escalate even further.

- Major disruptions to internet & telecoms have significantly hindered access to info.

- Reasons for disruption unclear; some expect it due to power shortages.

🧵The evacuation of embassies across Khartoum signals the international community's failure in #Sudan. While we pray for their safe departure, we also pray that when they return, they will dialogue humbly with Sudan's civil society leaders, not just warlords. #KeepEyesOnSudan
The U.S. & international community, including European nations, showed a failure of imagination by negotiating exclusively with SAF warlord Gen. Burhan🤏 and RSF warlord Hemedti🐍 instead of with Sudanese Resistance Committees, trade unions, intellectuals, young people & women.
We mourn the deaths of four Sudanese #humanitarian workers. Say their names:
* Siddig Abdalla Tahir, Osman Abdalla Ali & Yusuf Ibrahim of @WFP_Sudan, killed by RSF in Kabkabiya.
