Following all the ballyhoo from the #chequers cabinet & resultant white paper, something has changed. Finally the penny is beginning to drop. What is my evidence? Well of course its anecdotal but here are a few bits 2/
Watching #bbcqt last night from Brexity Dartford, there seemed to be a clear change of mood. There were the usual calls of "just leave" but the audience response was muted. @claireperrymp gave an admission - a 1st for Govt Minister of how difficult the process of leaving is. 3/
On #bbctw last night, Portillo felt that we may actually end up by remaining. All seem to agree that the process has taken a very unpredictable turn. Johnson was imploring Labour MPs not to allow no deal and to compromise. 4/
No one was prepared to say how they thought it was all going to play out. Indeed there was a ominous edginess to their response. Today I met with my business partner. He is a Brexiteer. We have had many heated arguments about #Brexit. The latest was over #PeoplesVote 5/
He accused me, Vince Cable & the LDs of being anti-democratic for supporting a vote on the deal. I called him a fascist for suggesting that democracy ended in 2016. Its the kind of arguement we have. Today was different. 6/
Unprompted he said that he thought the Govt has created a shambles. He said that he is beginning to think that I was right all along. That leaving the EU is going be disaster & far more complex than he expected. He said if there was another vote, he would vote to remain. 7/
I have to say I was stunned. He is pretty stubborn. He rarely admits he is wrong about anything. So yes all this is anecdotal but the mood is changing. I don't know if it will end well but I am slightly more optimistic than a week ago. #StopBrexitSaveBritain #FBPE 8/
